I don't think they care anymore which network it runs on, but merely the design of it. It will have a major redisign every 3 years.

Doubt it. I'm guessing Apple would stick to plain numbering system now, so the next iPhone is going to be called iPhone 5, simple. Besides, I think we will see Apple pairing the iPhone numbering system with iOS release (eg. iOS 4 and iPhone 4, thus iOS 5 and iPhone 5).
