Here is my problem:

I want the MBP at a discounted price. So I'm stuck waiting for the new MBP to come out until I can get a new computer. :(

I could just get it now and sell the ipod, but I plan on purchasing this laptop with my grant money. I don't want the gov. to get a receipt for 2k + when they're only expecting about 1.4k.

I remember when I first heard that the MBP was coming out. It didn't appear for quite some time. I forgot about it by the time it was released!

I think that's the right attitude. Now, I just have to decide between white and black. Is black less likely to crack?

my brother like me is careful with his computer and has had a white one for a year with no problems on the shell. I have a 4 year old ibook with no plastic shell problems. And my friend is getting his mom's used blackbook and they're harder on computers than us and its just fine. I think you'd have to be a pretty bad owner OR have lots of accidents to break the shell. You should be fine with whatever you go with. And I personally like the idea of white and black macbooks better than aluminum. I like aluminum as I'm getting the MBP. But i love the classic white look of the macbook, but then again I have a classic white ibook. Really either one should be fine for you! Only one thing I've noticed about the black. If you use the trackpad a lot it, the black one shows wear real bad. Best of wishes! Enjoy your new Macbook!

Yeah I have the black one, for me I just couldn't wait for the new one because of school, I prefer this model anyway. And even if I returned my MacBook and waited, and be the first few people to get the new MB it would definitely have faults and bugs. NO DUH

That'd be rad.

lol yea, for people that has an iphone. i personally don't want to pay that much every month for it. although its another way of making people buy iphone, i would never do it.

This weekend is tax free weekend in my state on computer sales. That will save me $150. Plus I want a free touch with my wife's educator discount so, I'm buying this weekend. I toyed with the idea of buying the stock 160GB HD so that I would have the 14 days for return if a new machine came out, but I've got 200 GB full on my PC, so I'm going to go 250GB and not look back.

trust me it's the best idea, there will always be new products coming out and if the machine you have works, and you like it whats the point of torturing yourself and waiting for an item that may never come out!

what about "real" updates

As stated in an earlier article, Mackbooks have not really updated much in a while and it's about time they do. But using a faster processor (Montevina), giving it a more aerodynamic design and adding a better touch pad has already been done. Sure they can reinvent the wheel, but for how long us users will accept that?... Well some true mac fans will take anything that the God gives them with no complaint, but what about the converters from PC and well, me, who uses both? When it comes to laptops I, as well as most of that second group I just mentioned want:

1. A Nelahem like processor, Blu Ray, higher monitor resolution (does not have to be touch screen although it could be nice) for playing HD content and better multimedia support (watch TV and movies in my laptop) as well as more memory card slots and connections (wire and wireless i.e bluetooth, IR, etc) most of this standard.

2. The hype of the Macbook Air is gone. This laptop has very limited use and capabilities (without perypherals) and at a great cost. If they would of made MacBook Air touch screen, now that would of been a totally useful innovation worth the money. Just like the iPhone was. Imagine seeing Mac's used at retail stores, restaurants, hospital staff and connecting it seamlessly with the iPhone wich could also create a NEW gaming experience, almost like Nintendo Wii, but not really!!!

3. More free apps, more open source support, more Web 2.0 integration, more games, more, more, more!!!

4. More affordable useful solutions

... "Apple can you hear me?... (Barbara s. singing):D:D

wow

This is all very interesting. Sounds like something creative and different.

But if its just overall at the end going to be doing the same thing as the current macbook then I could care less. Im a simple guy, want a book that is reliable....pretty much like every apple product. I am very satisfied with my white macbook I just got, besides Im lovin this glossy white its what attracted me to this piece so much

I will be looking forward to the new macbook though and see what breakthrough its gonna have.

Just a question for you guys:

My estimated budget at the moment is $1,500 for my new laptop.
So I could get the 15 inch 2.4GHz MBP + a pinter and ipod touch then sell the later two for a total of $1,600. This relies on someone willing to pay close to full price for the printer and ipod.

Or

I could wait for a MBP update and hopefully get one of the current ones on sale.

I'd really appreciate some opinions as I'm really inexperienced when it comes to computers especially macs (this will be my first).

[Edit: I've made a thread about this in the help forum. Didn't realize there was one.]

Higher resolution's about the only likely thing here. The rest? Apple's just not going in that direction.

Touchscreen would further raise the price for limited use (without OS/apps designed to take full advantage of them).

Aw to hell with it. revisions come out every 6 months. There will be at least 6 before I buy my next laptop. No sense torturing myself by waiting any longer. I'm gonna go buy a blackbook tomorrow.

i cool cause i wont be able to afford one till christmas, a by then the revison should be out, YAY TO ME AND MY PITIFUL SAVINGS ACCOUNT!!!! :):D

you wouldn't be able to sell them for $400. the ipod touch 8gb goes for around 200 on ebay and the printer goes for $50 on ebay. so a good 250 off the 2000. including tax.

even though that is a better sale than waiting for the update and get the out of date mbp :)

That'd be rad.

It would be the dumbest idea in the history of the universe.

Second screens under the trackpad are pointless IMO, I can't think of a single practical use for it. Keep it for moving the cursor around, the magic configurable screen would be the keyboard.

That notion is seconded. For that to be even vaguely convenient, you'd have to rest the iPhone on the palm rest, which isn't ergonomic. you'd have to unplug and relocate the thing every time you wanted to close the lid, and just drain battery powering a [400 MHz?] device just for an input device.

The only thing it'd be good for is like a mini display, like as another workspace where you keep your IM's or something...

Actually, from a business point of view, that's a terrible idea. Apple doesn't need to start giving away iPod Touch's with a brand new product. In fact, they don't have to give away anything with it, it's going to be selling quite fast. The only bad thing about this release date is Apple missing out on the back to school frenzy (students needing a laptop before the beginning of school). Anyways, looks like I'll have to wait a couple months for my new MacBook :( and I won't be getting a free iPod Touch.

This early reply just made me think of something. If Apple waits until September 15th (after the back to school rush) to release the new Macbooks, this may indicate that they will be sold at a low profit margin. That could indicate a disruptive, new technology that is incorporated. Until material/component costs come down due to volume production and manufacturing improvements, maybe Apple wants to purposely manage the demand in the early adoption stages. I think they know what they are doing from a business standpoint.

Yeah, I thought about that. I plan on selling the two at my sister's work place or in the newspaper for about $50 off the two or more off the itouch.

Do you know how much would be taken off the current mbp if a new one were to be released? I'm thinking $200 at the most. :-/

sweet, post when or if you get it? :D

Wow I just purchased the low-end MBP and I must say its amazing. Its plenty for me and I'm actually thinking I'll like this one much better than what the redesigned could be. I love the keyboard and the overall design is legendary. I've always loved the design and it'll be a computer can treasure from Apple's golden age of design. I'm so happy and have not even a single bit of regret for not waiting. It is snappy and runs amazing. Leopard is much nicer than tiger. I had no idea until now. Time machine saved me from buying backup software. I'm very happy! :D Best wishes to you all with whichever you choose. Just wanted to share my experience. God Bless!

i'm with you man.
I'm going to the Apple Store and buying a MBP tomorrow. The current machine is awesome! I'm tired of waiting. I waited 6 months. I want the free ipod touch, which I'd miss out of it I wait until sept. The next gen MBP will be about the same performance wise, so I won't miss out on much. And besides what are we really looking at: bigger glass track pad (who cares, i mostly use an external mouse), chicklet keyboard (hate it! Love the current keyboard), small performance boost. Plus the current design is a legendary design that I can forever have (I'm the kind of person who collects and keeps everything! ). How many times have we seen the MBP in tv ads and posters? Its design will forever be remembered.

I don't want the distraction during college. Its just not worth wasting my time on these forums anymore. I should've just bought it months ago. But you can't look back. Tomorrow I will MORE than enjoy my new MBP and will be ok regardless of what happens with the new one. Besides there's always a chance you take with a gen A product. The current design is pretty well worked out. I understand those who will wait. Maybe its the smart thing, but for the time I'll wast time waiting for it, its just a machine. God and people are so much more worth it!

God Bless to you all! Best of wishes with whatever you decide!

I just received my mbp 17" HR/WS/GL today!:D If you believe it or not, but it's still sealed in the box from shipping? I like the agony . Not sure when I am going to unbox it. Thinking that maybe I should just wait until next Tuesday just maybe just incase a revision comes out. But really doubt I'll make it through the w/e. ;)

Lucky, I still think the 17" is glorious. :O

Why plug it in? I would personally like to see the ability to use the iPhone as a bluetooth mouse/keyboard combo for all bluetooth equipped macs. It wouldn't necessarily be something you use a lot, but it would be nice to hook it up to an HDTV and be able to comfortably watch movies/listen to music/browse the web from the couch.
