So if a quality discussion is what you're really after, then how about you re-write that post in a constructive manner? For example, you could offer at least one practical example of a situation where 3D touch is clearly better than a long press or other UI solution that doesn't require a hard press on the screen.

The one 3D touch function that I do enjoy is the hard press to move the cursor and then select text while typing. But that one I wouldn't miss much on Android given how much more versatile in general the keyboards available there are. Like Swiftkey, which besides incredibly good swipe typing gives me super smooth copy/paste/cut functionality with a simple swipe, as well as customisation to truly optimise the keyboard according to my needs.

The hard press on home page icons functionality seem to be possible to replace with long press without exception, as seen in the video above.

Peek & pop seems to be in pretty much all cases directly replaceable with long press + slide.

Bottom line, I'm happy to see that Google is making an effort with deepening UI functionality using solutions that don't require a hard press on the screen.

The iPhone has both long press and 3d touch, you don't have to argue whats better. If you don't find peek and pop useful, then i don't see why it would matter if you access that feature by either long press or 3d touch.

Customization will be gone, that's for sure. Even if some small vendors make their phones rootable/unlockable you know eventually Google will not let them use its apps, forcing them to comply. It's very interesting to see Google change as a company which embraced open source and customization to getting closer and closer to a walled garden, very sad as well.

You forgot Moto. The moto X/Z brand is still pretty strong. The midrange Moto Z Play ($400) is actually a very nice phone, especially with its stellar battery life. When it comes to a pure android experience, Moto provides comes the closest. The few non-Nexus tricks it does have are quite useful (twist to open camera, chop to turn on flashlight, topnotch hands free voice commands and services)

I think Google is starting to realize many consumers don't want the openness, in fact many don't even know of all the options and customization features Android has . For end users who love tinkering, but for the masses this will streamline Android. In my opinion, not that it really matters haha, Google is going to walk things off just like Apple has. They've already started with Google Assistant, you have to buy Pixel to use it on your phone and the Google home to let you access it at home. One finds mental difference is Apple doesn't seem to rely on the cloud as much as Google. One example is Google docs vs iWork. Google docs can only be edited online, but Apple offers desktop apps. It's looking more and more like Apple vs Google rather than Apple vs Samsung. This should be fun

Galaxy Nexus all over again. Did not Google learn from that, it was a horrible exclusive, and Verizon pissed off the Nexus loyal users. And I could have sworn that Google admitted a year or two later, that it was a mistake to have an exclusive Verizon Nexus phone, that Google engineers were unhappy with the way Verizon handled Galaxy Nexus.

I just told my brother, who is a happy Nexus 5X owner, I said did you hear that Google will only have the Pixel phones on Verizon carriers only, no one else. He said " No way ? Google wouldn't be that stupid, and shoot themselves in the foot like that. " I then asked my Brother, are you gonna upgrade from your Nexus 5X to the 5" Pixel ? He said " For $650+, not a chance, I'll probably look at the OnePlus Three instead, or OnePlus Four in the Spring "

And my brother and his wife are very successful people, earning an extremely good living themselves.

We'll see how this plays out six months from now ? Either A they do follow the Galaxy Nexus path, and the phone sees a massive price drop come April, just like the G Nexus did. Or B they release it on all carriers after Verizon exclusive. Or C it remains the super nerd niche phone for the .05% smartphone geeks

There's not the big deal with Nazi-Verizon getting this BS exclusive. It's that #1 it will have a locked down bootloader which is extremely anti Nexus type phone. And #2 Verizon will do the system updates on the Pixel phones, not Google.

Back in the Galaxy Nexus days with it also being a Verizon only phone, they were notoriously bad on slow updates, and delays, and just mucking up the whole point of it being a Nexus phone. I recall reading a year or so later that Google admitted never again allow a carrier that much control.
 
Just buy a Nexus 6P on Black Friday if you want a good steal + Nexus software. Considering how some people still use a Nexus 5 2013, you can get away with the 6P for another 2 years.
 
Man this thread is worst then most of the iPhone threads when a new iPhone comes out. I have not seen this much b***ing and moaning in a long time. Get over it. Move on, or let it go. This has been going on for the last 10 pages or more.

I don't understand it. Alright you get mad for a day when you hear about the price. Then I guess you realize you can't afford it but you want it really bad, so now you trash it on the forum so you can convince yourself it's not worth it? I really don't know.

If people truly did not like the phone, we would hear about it for a day. This has gone on his is announcement, and saying "I know all these people that won't buy it, I asked them. It's cost too much, and they are wealth and they still want buy it". Seriously I have not seen it this bad even in the iPhone section for a long time. If we listen to the people here, Google won't make it through another year. They are done. Lol

I would completely understand if people came in here and said, "ya know what? It looks like a decent enough phone, but it's just more than I'm willing to spend right now and I think my money is better spent on a OP3 or Honor 8 or a used S7." And I'd be happy. It's the constant complaining like a bunch of little junior high kids. If you don't like it, fine, but move on. Buy something else. This doesn't mean the end of Google. In fact, I think it very could mean something much more different.

This is pretty much what I've been asking for - a Google-made phone that can get me as immersive in Google's ecosystem as I can be in Apple's. The price is a lot. It's a lot for me to stomach. But if I spend $300 less and don't have that experience, then I won't be happy even if I have an extra $300. I had already plopped down $1100+ for an iPhone 7 Plus 256gb, so this is actually cheaper. I've since returned my iPhone because it refused to record video without some popping/cracking sounds.

I totally agree. If they would just say the phone is way too much for what if offers, and they are not buying cool. We have had 10+ post by poster repeating the same crap over and over. We get that you guys don't like it. Stop telling us this 5 times.

Let's wait and see what happens before we declare Google done. People thought Apple was crazy with first iPhone, and then the 3G as well. They all said over priced for the specs. There may be some growing pains at first, but I think Google has a great plan. If this causes people on android to go after just Google Pixels for android, and not companies like Samsung. I think that is a very good thing. Give us one good android and one good Apple device, and we get some real smartphones. Stop letting Samsung, and LG destroy android. This could be a very good thing. I am excited to see what happens.

I personally don't want to buy this phone, but I feel somewhat obligated to let my family and friends know that the Pixel is available unlocked and not tied to a carrier.

What a mess.
 
The more I read about it, the more interested I get actually, but I'll still hold off until the S8 unveil to make my decision. That or wait for 2017's Pixel. I wonder who they'll have help manufacturer it...

Past performance indicates that no, the modern consumer cannot figure it out themselves. US sales widely indicate that consumers still buy from carriers.

The phone is advertised as exclusively on Verizon, which isn't true.

I do agree that the advertising is VERY misleading. I don't know why they're doing that.
