Nexus X and Nexus P ( 2015 ) Smartphones

Wow. Missed delivery already today! Less than 24 hours after ordering they attempt to deliver the 6P but sadly Im not home 🙁 Hope to get it tomorrow though by collecting from the local post office.

Does anyone know if the 'return day count' starts from day of first attempted delivery or when I actually collect the parcel? If I do return it I dont intend on waiting until the very last minute - I'll give it at least a week before deciding!
 
There will be black Friday deals on nexus devices. What the deal entails no one knows yet. Google has only released a tease on twitter.

I am hoping for some discounts but it seems a free gift card or something is more realistic.

Eyeing that 5x as a gift for someone... Possibly 6p for myself if the deal is right.

Anyway picked up the phone this morning.

Initial impressions , which may well change radically after a few days:

- screen is good. iPhone's is better I think.
- When a new wireless hotspot is found you get that annoying wireless notification on the notification bar at the top. I was well aware of that from my note 4 days and I thought it was a touchwiz thing. Seems a petty thing to complain about but it annoys the crap out of me as I'm absolutely OCD about leaving my notifications bar free of notifications as much as possible.
- keyboard is by far the best on any android device I've had before. Even better than Swype. However, the iOS default keyboard gets my vote for the best on any device I've had. I type accurately on the ios keyboard 99% of the time.
- fingerprint sensor on the back is 'different' but very good. I can see it annoying me if I have to pick the phone up from a desk for example and unlocking it. But I do like the fact you just touch it and it wakes the phone up.
- I took some camera shots side by side. Can find no major difference in quality between the iphone and the Nexus except the nexus showed some greenish type shade where I couldnt see any.

Enough for now... more thoughts later.

Go into Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced (found under 3 dot menu icon in top right corner) and toggle off the Network Notification option

- fingerprint sensor on the back is 'different' but very good. I can see it annoying me if I have to pick the phone up from a desk for example and unlocking it. But I do like the fact you just touch it and it wakes the phone up.

You could set up Smart Lock (found under Security settings) so that you don't need to unlock your device under 'safe' circumstances (i.e. at home, in the car, if connected via BT to a peripheral such as a smart watch)

More thoughts:

WiFi signal seems go be stronger on the iPhone.
The nexus appears faster due to the faster scrolling rate. I think we already know the iPhone appears slower when scrolling due to the ios look and feel design.
Nexus 6p is the first android phone I've had which actually feels premium to hold.
OK Google v Hey Siri:
Google voice dialing is crap. Gets the name I want dialling totally wrong 99% of the time !!!. I'd experienced this previously on the Note 4
Hey Siri is very accurate and rarely gets is wrong. I am always using voice dial as I drive a lot so this feature means a lot to me.
Google Now is brilliant and I wish ios had something similar to match

Thanks for your impressions. Good point on the bold. Remember when iOS 7 first launched? The animations really milked themselves. Everything slowed down to display animations. Since then, with 8 and 9, Apple has moved to faster transitions to improve performance, but I'm not sure it has ever been the same as it was.

Yes I vaguely remember what you're talking about. Indobget bothered with the slow svroll rate on ios but its not a deal breaker and I have got used to it over the last 2 months or so using the 6s Plus. This slowness is less apparent on the 6s compared to the 6 models and I'm sure Apple will deliberately slow down the 6s this time next year to make us want to upgrade .

Anyway more thoughts on the nexus . sorry hope people dont mind me typing as I think of new things to say rather than one big long post.

Speakers on the nexus are much better quality than the iPhone as they are stereo and almost good enough to play music in the background while working

The phone does seem to be getting hot at the back. And that's just due to internet browsing. I dread to think what it will be like when I make a call lasting longer than 10 mins

I prefer the OK Google and Google maps combo and strangely enough despite OK Google being rubbish for voice dialling it works very well for directions.

Siri and Apple maps work well together too but I prefer Google Maps for navigation as it knows about any traffic problems ahead and will re route automatically

Generally (I don't do much voice dialing), Google Now is a superior product from a phone integration standpoint for two reasons. First (And I'm speaking purely as an American), I find the voice recognition is superior. Second, Google services integration on Android is superior to Apple service integration on iOS.

This is super ironic, I just got on here to post about the lag/slowness I've been seeing on my 5x in the first few days.

It's totally fine when you first unlock it and runs great, but after a few minutes of browsing around and using some apps like Facebook it gets quite warm to the touch and starts running super slow. Then there's the camera app that runs down to 5-10 fps in the viewfinder at times and stutters while taking photos even with HDR turned off. It's really got me worried about it.

At other times you can open darn near every app on the phone, hit the multitasking menu and it's buttery smooth 60fps and resumes apps promptly. But if you keep using it for a while it gets slow again. For instance, using the stock camera app and recording a video or even taking a single photo then going back to the home screen can cause the whole launcher to reload along with Google now. That's a bit embarrassing. My 2014 Moto X was perfectly fine doing that.

Basically as long as it's cool and not being throttled it's happy, but after a bit of use it down clocks and is a mess. The SD 801 phones I had didn't seem to have this issue, like the Moto X and HTC One M8. Both were super fast and the only reason I left was because of the cameras on both. M8 lacked resolution and blew everything out and the Moto was pretty bad in low light. That's one upside of the 5X, the camera (not the app but the photos themselves) has been superb. Pretty much on par with my 6 Plus when taking photos side by side.

I'll give it some more time and a few reboots but if it's still bothering me I'll send it back, as much as I love Marshmallow and the size/build of the 5X, the UI lag on my 6 Plus is starting to not look quite so bad. Dropped frames aren't as big of a deal as having your home screen reload and app switcher take 5 seconds to come up.

Oh, and I can easily go from 100% charged to 30% by 3PM, where my 6 Plus wouldn't get that low till about 9PM. Smaller battery I know, but worth noting. Luckily it'll regain half it's charge in 20 minutes or so. Pretty much the same usage too.

* One more note. Regarding charging, my model produced this month has no issues with the touch screen while charging like some of the launch units. Performance seems to be the same too.

Do you have Snapchat installed? There is big problems being reported with the 5x and Snapchat. It drains your battery and makes the phone extremely laggy, even if if is closed. Facebook I have read is doing something similar. Try uninstalling both these apps and see if your lag issues persist.

some more thoughts about the Nexus 6P after using it for a day or so:

Camera: No noticeable difference between 6s Plus and Nexus, although on a couple of pics the Nexus has thrown up a random greenish shade.

Screen: Colours are better refined on the iphone. This is quite important to me as I watch a LOT of streaming.

BBC IPlayer: This deserves its own section as I download and watch a lot of shows, both Radio and TV. One annoying difference is Background App Refresh is not supported in ios, so when downloading, if screen goes in standby mode, then it stops downloading, and it also stops if you switch apps. Easy(ish) workaround is go in settings and set screen lockout to 'never'.

Android wins here as you just start the download then forget about it.

Touch ID v fingerprint sensor on 6P : both equally just as good. the 6P sensor is in an unusual location and it takes time to get used to. One important thing to note is Touch ID has been around a bit longer, so certain apps like the AMEX one that I use a lot, support Touch ID to log in - big plus for me.

Sky WiFi app: Im not sure why but it doesnt seem to be supported as I can't get it to work on the Nexus. could just be a software glitch, but its not a huge issue. It just means I can't automatically pick up supported wifi hotspots when on the move.

WiFi Calling: supported and works out of the box on the 6s Plus. Not yet supported by my operator (EE) on the Nexus. This is quite useful to me as my cellular reception at home can be rubbish at the best of times and WiFi Calling has been a godsend.

Next I'll play with Google Photos on both IOS and Android and see the major differences 🙂



At the moment I'm still edging towards the 6s Plus for now. I'll keep using the Nexus for a couple of more days at least.
 
5x is $80 bucks off for black Friday. Nothing on 6p (ugh).

Return policy also extended for holidays. If you purchase between Nov 27 and Dec 25, you have till Jan 22nd go return.

I pulled the trigger. Hope Google will sort out the software issues by Xmas.

Thanks Blaze. I had Snapchat installed the first day to check a story from a friend out of town but uninstalled it after that since I've also read about it causing major issues. I do have the Facebook app installed though for the first time in forever since I've been using the browser on my iPhone and Z10.

I installed the camera update, the one on my phone and the Play Store is still v2.5.052 so maybe this will help. I've been using Manual Camera and it's been perfectly smooth so it's got to be something in Google's app.

Also, it's been mostly fine this morning after I did a reboot last night. But then I went to compose an email in the Gmail app and it started scrolling up and down a tiny bit by itself and wouldn't let me hit send or any of the action buttons up top. It persisted after a reboot too so that was really strange. Probably an isolated bug since I've never seen it before on anything else.

I really want to love this phone because it's so nice and light, has a good size, and is quite grippy. I just wish AT&T supported WiFi calling on something other than the iPhone 6 and 6s. That was part of why I moved from Verizon was so I could call where there is next to no reception at my parents place on any carrier.

I'll give it till next week and see how it is. 🙂 Kind of wish I could have grabbed it from the Google store today for $80 off though!
