Normally, this wouldn't get much of a second glance, especially during the NFL football season. But since this completely bucks the stereotype, it's worth a shout.

While one could say that he is directly responsible for the type of actions that caused Borland to retire, it is a rarity to see someone not do this for the money, and actually have more than enough brains to accompany the brawn. I'd love to see him presented with his PhD in the middle of a game, then go take on the chess world.

The actress who played the young girl on "The Wonder Years" (loved that show) is a published mathematician.

True, but I'd still take Dr. Mayim Bialik. ;)

    Very cool story.

    To add a little:

Most people don't realize that about 50% of active NFL players have a college degree. Not to mention, most go back to school after the NFL to finish their degrees. The NFL has a better college graduate ratio than any other major sport.

-Frank Ryan had a PhD in mathematics from Rice
-Ryan Fitzpatrick received an economics degree from Harvard
-Steve Young has a law degree
-Alan Page had a law degree and was a justice for the Supreme Court in Minnesota
-Charley Johnson got his doctorate, worked for NASA and was a professor at New Mexico St.
