I went out last night to take some long exposures / night photos for class hoping with a tripod I would be able to get up to 30 seconds but it did not detect a tripod and I couldn't get over 4 seconds. Does anyone know how to get this to work or force it? Other wise night mode is pretty pointless for me.

The camera detects how much available light. You are not always going to get 30 seconds, even with a tripod. You almost need zero external lighting, other than the stars.

I think it has to do more with your surroundings.
