Night Shift always turns itself off, scheduling doesn't stay on?

I'm using a 2022 mac mini with macOS 26.5. And I'd really like to use Night Shift, but every time I turn it on it works for a while then turns itself off in a day or so. I've checked all the settings mentioned in internet articles on this problem, and all settings are as they should be for Night Shift to work. I've resorted to f.lux, which I used to use with Windows back in the day, but I'd prefer to use the built-in functionality of macOS.

Anyone have any luck with fixing this, or is it as hopeless as it seems?
