I'm loving Night Shift on Sierra but it's not coming on automatically at sunset even though I have it supposedly set to do so.

Anyone else have this problem? Is it supposed to come on right at sunset or slowly turn on over the course of an hour? It was already about 40 minutes after sunset and it showed no sign of coming on.

Night shift is not supported by the graphics chips on some older Macs.
For example, the Intel HD graphics 3000 does not support that.
It also is not supported on connected projectors or TVs.
    Which Mac do you have?

If you are sure that you have a supported Mac, try turning it off, then back on, from System Preferences/Displays/Night Shift tab. (if you don't have a Night Shift tab, then that's another proof that your Mac hardware is not supported)
Uncheck "turn on until sunrise", then re-check that box. Give it a few seconds to make the change (it is not instantaneous) You should see a change in the screen color.

I had the opposite problem: it wouldn't turn off this morning until I turned it off manually (late 2013 13" retina MBP), even though it was 90 minutes after the end of the period.

I don't know whether it's supposed to do so gradually (i.e. over minutes rather than a few seconds), but it would be silly to do that irrespective of the time and I didn't have the patience to find out.

I have the same problem on a 15", late 2013 retina MBP!

But when I opened it tonight it started up in night mode straight away. Will have to see what happens tomorrow morning.

(I use custom rather than "sunset to sunrise" - I may test that another time).

Yeah, I gave up and set it to custom, and now it's working.

It's not that big a deal; this isn't like turning on an exterior light where being an hour late or early is a problem. The most critical thing is that it be in night mode in the couple hours leading up to bedtime.

That was my thinking: I didn't need it to turn on at whenever it thinks sunset is.

This morning it seemed to turn off OK, though it was more than 2 hours after the end of my "night shift" when I first opened the lid (I have it set to end well before I'd normally get up, I reckon that if I'm up and using the computer at that time I'm not planning on going back to bed).

Going to try the sunset to sunrise option today, just to see.

Edit: Yeah, that worked too (both evening and morning). So it looks like it not turning off the first time was a glitch of some sort, and I'll worry about it if it happens again.
