totally agree. RunKeeper is pretty awesome. If anyone is interested, here is my review: http://blaineb.com/main/2010/4/27/iphone-app-review-runkeeper.html

My problems with runkeeper are that it doesn't seem to poll the gps often enough to stay accurate, and it doesn't keep track of altitude. So while it might be fine for running along city blocks, I've found that for trail running it cuts too many corners, resulting in fairly wide swings in its calculated pace. That and it's lack of altitude info means that over longer distances, it will invariably come up short, in my case, 5% - 10% of the actual distance. MotionGPS is much more accurate in both those respects, but unfortunately it doesn't do voiceover, which is the one nice thing I like about runkeeper.

Then again, running with an iphone is a pita anyway, so I've really only used either app about three times each over the last year. If Nike's heart rate monitor is decent kit, though, I'd consider getting a new nano just for that. Though the polar monitors might still be a better deal if you don't need a new ipod anyway. GPS is cool, but heart rate is far, far more useful a thing to keep on top of from a training standpoint.

I would love to have a Garmin Running GPS, but they are very expensive here in DK... As long as I can measure my route using online running maps and monitor my heart rate with my old skool heart monitor, Nike+ gives me a good estimate of how my speed were at different points... I always listen to music while running so it isn't like I have to bring extra stuff and I really like the audio feedback, and of cause Lance calling me a champ every once in a while... :)

So all in all I like Nike+...

I dont see why they are going to support this current model of iPod when the new model will be showcased in June...

Well, gee lets see... To achieve better market penetration for the new product... (anyway, the likelihood of new iPod Nano is not that great)

I love the Nikes in that picture, but you can't get them anywhere (in the UK)..

Nike Lunarglide+, you shouldn't have any problems getting them in the UK! Or did you mean that specific colour? These trainers have been out less than a year and already I've lost track of the amount of colour schemes that have come and gone. Fantastic running shoes though!

I wish I ran. As much as I love new gadgets I doubt this will motivate me

Why not give it a try? If you start with realistic goals its easier than you probably think. Even if one or two miles may be some work at the beginning you can improve quickly. I started running last November and now I have run the half marathon (13 mi) distance several times. I was overweight and did not do any sports for a long time. It is not rocket science.

Its fun, really.

I have a watch from GlobalSat. It can often be found for 80-90€ on ebay new. It has HRM and GPS. It shows time, distance, hr, pace, calories etc. It can split your workout into laps based on time, distance or manually. You can configure the display to show the information you need much like on a Garmin. The memory lasts for about 15 hr of workout data (at one sample per second) and the battery lasts for 9hr or so. There are free tools available to transfer the tracks to a Mac (the included software is Windows only). The GPS tracks look accurate on GoogleEarth (SiRF III chip).

I think it is similar to a Garmin with HRM (but that costs 160€ or something). Don't know the prices in DK, but there are other (and cheaper) GPS watches.

AppleInsider points to a thread in the official Nike+ forums announcing that a Nike + iPod heart rate monitor is due for launch on June 1st.Plans for the heart rate monitor were revealed last September in a revision to Apple's Nike + iPod User Guide, which claimed that the device will only be compatible with the fifth-generation iPod nano.

At the time, reports indicated that Nike had been planning to launch the heart rate monitor alongside the new iPod nano, but it is unclear at this time why the monitor experienced an approximately nine-month delay.

Not to be a party pooper, but just to be somewhat analytical, let me mention this:

Read the quote above and then compare it to the article. No where in the forum quote did he say that a Nike + iPod connector would be released, rather just a Nike + connector. Am I off base in thinking it could be unspecific to iPod / iPhone? :apple:

That colour is starting to come into stores now, first saw them about two weeks ago, much better than the grey/luminous green ones I bought. Great shoes, they're the first pair of nikes I can run in, having previously only used asics.

i'm sure of the following:
native compatibility with ipad
not compatible with (my) ipodnano 4g

maybe it is still a pessimistic ex microsoft addicted thinking... i'm sorry, i'm changing, slowly but i'm changing

You're correct, but considering the quote was published in a thread specifically asking about an iPod Nike+ HRM, I remain optimistic.

Heart rate monitors are useful, it's just too bad that Nike+ isn't.

Depends on what you want it to do for you.

Before buying a Nike+ kit for my 1G iPod nano three years ago, I did absolutely no exercise and was 20 pounds overweight.

Since then, I've logged more than 10,000 miles, dropped those 20 pounds — and kept them off.

For me, Nike+ has been a real motivator.

Yep, sad as it maybe, I find gadgets a great motivator when it comes to fitness

HR Monitor - fantastic!

I can't believe the negativity on this thread.

I use Nike+ every other day at the gym. Sure, it isn't exactly accurate, but its close enough and fairly consistent. I love keeping track of my metrics on the Nike+ website, and it's been a fantastic motivator for me. So what if its mostly flash - we aren't pricing complex financial instruments here!

I use a Polar HR monitor now, mostly during my run to make sure I stay in my range. I would love to see HR logged as part of the Nike+ stats. I find HR to be a great indicator of overall fitness, and I like to watch as I (slowly) get fitter over time. Having the Run and HR data plotted together is something I've been looking forward to.

Isn't it great that technology is being used to support an activity, rather than being yet another display to stare at while we wiggle our fingers?!

I wonder if a chest strap will be involved and who'll make it. Of course, w/o the combination of GPS on the NIKE +, it seems dubious to offer accurate heart rate while mileage is usually off 5-10%, even with calibration. Runkeeper is great, yet running with an iPhone is very cumbersome--that's why if Apple can sneak in GPS in its Nano, or somehow Nike can put it in the sensor or remote--that would be ideal...

Runkeeper HRM solution

Those of you that like the runkeeper apps - what do you use for a heart rate monitor? Will Nike+ be the solution?

From the 4g teardown - we're going to see a larger battery, a new updated (hopefully less power consuming, more accurate GPS) amongst other things.

Could Nike+ do multiple sensors? If not, I think the Wahoo Fitness style ANT Sport sensor direction might work v well.

But why on June 1st, not at the WWDC? Why a few days beforehand? It'd be interesting if Apple had made a deal with Garmin, to open up the chip that does the Nike+, to be able to actually talk with ANT sensors. That would be huge! Wahoo is already offering an API even if this doesn't happen.

So for iPhone users running/cycling
- Nike+ will give Nike app & HR at least
- Wahoo Fitness hardware will give HR, Cadence, footpod I think too. Multiple apps in the area will be using their API.
- Runkeeper - well, they've been darn quiet. They're not going with Wahoo as yet.

You went from "no exercise and was 20 pounds overweight" to running 10 miles a day, 7 days a week, 30 days a month for 3 years straight? :D

Nike+ needs GPS support or I will never use it when there are better apps like Runkeeper available.

I agree, and use iTrail with a Polar heart rate monitor. I just can't see the pont in the Nike + with an iPhone. I'm interested to see how the heart rate monitor works because I would like an iPhone heart rate App also (and ditch the watch). Hopefully with OS 4.0 (multitasking) you can use a GPS program (like iTrail) and the Nike heart rate monitor together (unless Nike goes GPS).

Out of curiosity has does the Nike + communicate with an iPhone: Bluetooth or WiFi? Will the Nike heart rate strap do the same or will you be required to have the + shoe "puck"? It seems that in order to make you buy the shoes (or at least jerry-rig) it would need to communicate through the (a new version) "puck".

Think it uses the BT system, but doesn't use the BT protocol and instead uses a proprietary Nike one.

Anyway, it's 1st June. Where is it?
