Nike today updated its popular "Nike+ Running" iOS app with a new name, "Nike+ Run Club," as well as introducing various user interface changes and features (via Fast Company). The big new addition centers around "coaching plans" that let users choose a workout and running plan, which then dynamically adapt to the specific progress made by each user.

Some of these plans include categories like "Getting Started" and "Get More Fit," which falls in line with Nike's mission statement of treating each one of its customers like a professional athlete in order to help them "reach their full potential." Within each plan there's a new "Benchmark Run" that gauges the improvements -- or slacking off -- of each user as they work their way through a workout.

With the latest version of fitness app Nike+ Run Club, for example, personalized coaching for newbie runners is central to the experience. As the app learns more about you, it tailors your workouts accordingly.

"If you have a body, you're an athlete," says Jay Lee, global head of product for Nike+. "What we've learned is that we really need to serve [athletes] as individuals if we want them to reach their full potential."
On the social side of things, Nike has made it easier to share progress with friends on social networks as well as tweaked its leaderboards tab with new ways to compare and compete with people who are also using the app. Users will also be able to use the companion Apple Watch app independently of the iOS app, since the new update allows users to "run free" and leave their iPhone behind.

The new "Club" naming style follows in the footsteps of Nike+ Training Club [Direct Link], which focuses on a wider array of weight and strength training. For anyone who has yet to download it, Nike+ Run Club is available for free on the App Store. [Direct Link]

Maybe now Nike and Apple can concentrate on fixing the syncing issue with iTunes and the iPod Nano. I get an error message about permissions every time I try to send my running data to Nike. At least I can use the Apple Watch app without the phone now.

FINALLY! I have been waiting for an update to WatchOS 2.0 for what feels like an eternity. Have been using the Nike community since the very first iPod nano 1.0 but it have just been so bad, that I have been using the very basic build in app since launch.

All fingers crossed now, before testing tomorrow

I wish the new Nike+ Run Club integrated and created playlists on Apple Music as well, not just Spotify. Would think with Tim Cook being on Nike's board surely Apple Music/Playlists would be a great value add to both brands. I like the new design of the app, and will be five stars once NRC starts creating Apple Music playlists.
*The default running playlists Apple music does have are lacking. 15 or 20 songs. The NRC playlists are usually huge and have great variety for short, long, fast, etc runs. It's a place Apple Music can definitely improved upon within the running section, especially with the upcoming rumor Apple Watch 2.

Be warned, as pretty as this update looks, it will wipe a lot of your data. Reports of people losing all their trophies / mileage etc. I was several weeks into a coach program for an October half marathon and my progress is gone. I now cant set up a program for the same race as its deemed too soon. This is a very frustrating situation for a lot of people. The app is far slower to load and training programs have been completely re-worked making current programs very hard to transition over.

Looks like it lost all my logged data about mileage on each pair of shoes. Greattt.
I just checked and found the same thing. Luckily I've been exporting everything to Strava, but that would suck to re-enter or lose all that data. Unfortunately, it looks like the desktop website is just as broken as always, so you don't get the option to do it there. I'm pretty sure I've gotten the "unable to connect to our servers" message more times than I've been able to log into Nike+. :-/

That sucks about losing data. I guess I'll hold off on updating mine. I actually have an old version of the app that I run on my primary phone (version 4.5.4) that I still run with. I try out the new version on a spare phone each time they upgrade it, but the recent versions have been so crappy, that I'm still running with the old version. I hope they get the data loss issue cleared up soon.

Agreed. It's a great app in some ways but I think I will be saying goodbye to it next month and using the Apple Workouts app on (hopefully) a newly released Apple Watch. Unless of course I can find something with a better combination of stability/features.

Probably a smart idea. Unfortunately I have auto-update turned on so I woke up to it like that. Doh! :(

Even more frustrating, is the fact it says coaching program says four weeks of coaching is the minimum. However, as you point out about, it refuses to let a user set up a training program even for the end of October. I lost my marathon coach progress too, and it will not let me set up the new coach because there's not enough time left. But we still have to run, even nike refuses to coach us for a marathon scheduled earlier than mid-November.

Same here, all my notes and shoes gone. And can't log in to the nikeplus.com website. Already in contact with nike support. The positive thing is that they added the 3d touch in the App icon to have a quick run, which i requested since the 6s launched.

I remember reading on Nike app that the new program would wipe out current coaching. I have written down the schedule remaining for my marathon but I like seeing the mileage so maybe now I'll just hold off on updating until it's fixed or after the marathon in seven weeks

The thing I like about this app is that it has a graph of all my runs, much easier to view than in Garmin Connect, which is why I have connected the Garmin API to the Nike app.

With this version the landscape orientation is removed, which sucks.

I tested it this morning works fine with my Apple watch and i left my IPhone behind very good, but still need to connect with Beats1 Live streaming on the Nike + App, incase i am not a fan of Spotify.

  • Super slow to load on iPhone 6
  • Took ages to log-in/sync, wouldn't work over 4G, needed wi-fi.
  • Challenges have disappeared, disappointing
  • Trophies have disappeared too
  • It has lost the name of my shoes
  • I can't change/upload new photo ("upload error")
  • It switched from metric to imperial... had to go deep into settings to set it back into metric...
  • Orientation was messed up, it didn't remember my settings from the previous version of the app... boring when you wear your phone on a strap and have to fiddle through settings.
  • Spotify had been disconnected, had to re-connect it manually.
  • Everybody has got to manually re-opt-in to sharing in the "friends leaderboard", in settings, as a result, where I used to have about 28 friends to follow there's only one left, and "27 have no kilometres left"... ********.
  • There an "inbox" with a "welcome to Nike+ run club" message but I can't open it, it says "False start". The ever-present unread message, straight from LinkedIn's book...
  • All 3 running clubs are fully booked, with no way to create new ones... how social is that.
  • That green icon with text is tacky on my home screen. Much preferred the old, simple red one
In other words, it's a complete mess for me so far... Feels like an early beta...

PS: can't even leave a review on the AppStore because I downloaded the Nike+ running app from the French App Store in 2011, then moved over to the UK and switched App Stores... and when I try to leave a review, an App Store pop up reads "You must buy/download this app first before you can leave a review"... Just out of curiosity, after 8 versions of iOS with the bug, are they fixing that in iOS 10?

I've got mine set as metric, but all the run records are displaying in imperial. Wtf? Also I had to tell it my height and weight, and it's lost the details again, even though I allowed it to get details from the health app. I mainly use it because of the integration with music controls, maybe I'll have to learn to use Strava.

[doublepost=1471953836][/doublepost]What marathon coaching plan were you on? If you were on advanced would you be willing to share the rest of the program. I am two weeks after the half marathon trial run. This is the SECOND time I've lost my coaching information in the last three weeks. Once with the app upgrade and once when I switched from android to an iphone 6s+. Thank you!!!

It sees my Apple Music running playlist, but only shows about 10 songs of the 110 in the playlist. All have been downloaded locally to the iPhone, so I don't know why a few are seen by Nike Plus Run Club and most aren't...

[doublepost=1471969535][/doublepost]Also, I got my usual notification today telling me how far I have to run, so the data for the coaching plan is still there, just seems no way to access an existing plan... frustrating!

Thank you! This is better than sitting an hour+half on Nike custumer support line! I'll watch for the notifications. Any idea which are farks, pace runs?
