If i just run the Nike App from the watch. I get no heart rate data. But If I run the apple native workout app and the Nike App at the same time from the watch. I get heart rate data on the Nike App. Any thoughts?

Not just you. 3rd Party app can't use HR data. The way you are doing it is the only way for now.

can't say for certain if this is the issue, but 3rd party apps don't have access to the HR capabilities of the Watch. But perhaps running the workout app concurrently actually enables 3rd party apps to get the data?

Just reread what you said. where are you seeing HR data in the Nike app. I only see it in the phone health app

I know this doesn't add anything to the thread. But given that the apple watch is capable of having third party apps... and that it has a heart rate sensor... its pretty ridiculous that this watch did ship with that capability. Obviously a software update will fix it.... but Given that most people will use this at the gym it renders all third party apps that need a heart rate sensor useless. So retarded.

Interesting. I may have to start doing this. Is this something from the health app maybe? Allowing Nike to read heart rate data from the health app?

'Retarded' is pretty strong when you're talking about the first OS iteration on a first generation product.

Third party apps do their processing on the iPhone at present, so for workout apps to record heart rate data the watch would be constantly communicating that info via bluetooth to the phone. Not exactly ideal.

As you say, a software update will ultimately fix this.

That's really interesting and i can't get mine to replicate that!

Although third party apps cannot access heart rate i do note in the health app on my phone under heart rate / share data - that nike running can read data.

Under the share data i note it says further down that running is inactive. I wonder what yours says!?

Mine doesn't say inactive.

If you click on running what does the next screen say?

Mine shows below that it can read the heart rate but it doesn't seem to. Yours seems to work as it should.

That has happened to me as well. Running with both the Nike+ GPS and the Apple native "run outside" workout gives me a HR reading on the Nike+ GPS app.

Nike can't get it from the watch. I assume it is picking up the data somewhere else. Like the Health App.

I do have a BT Chest Strap that I would occasionally use when running (pre-watch) w/the Nike. I have not tried syncing to the Watch. I don't mind running with my iPhone as I have been doing it for years.

Mine shows Nike as inactive here as well. If you click edit you can "activate" but as soon as you leave the screen and come back it goes back to inactive.

But even so if Nike Running is reading heart rate data and heart rate is being taken during the run at decent intervals due to the workout app running I would think it could read the heart rate information.

I am gonna test it out on a run and see what happens.

I've also been running with both the Nike and Workout apps and see no heart rate data in Nike, but I have a thought.

I've been starting Nike first, then Workout app. Are you, OP, starting Workout first? Maybe the Nike app checks if heart rate data is present only when you start a run.

EDIT: I see post #6 where OP stated "Now If I run the Watch Workout App and then The Nike App. I get Heart Rate applied." so maybe the key is to start Workout first.

Didn't work for me. And I started workout app first then nike app.
I can see the data points in the health app so the data is there I guess even though Nike says its reading it it is not applying it to runs.

I did it again tonight on a treadmill.

I am more annoyed that I have to hit start on the treadmill. Start on the workout app and start on the nike app.

Also annoying. The treadmill read 4.0 miles, The workout app read 3.1 miles and the Nike App was 3.46. Which one is correct?

After you start the workout app on your watch do you then start the nike app also from your watch or from your phone ??

Haven't been able to make it work yet for me but intend to try again tomorrow.

I start everything from the watch.

So on the watch I start a run on the native workout app.
hit the crown and go to the nike watch app
and hit start.

when i am done I force end the nike app, force end the workout app.

I must either have a glitch letting me do it or some setting is on.

Thanks I will have to try that.

Very interesting.

I use the Nike+ Running app and tried it in conjunction with the built-in exercise app on the watch for the last few days.

Although I've turned the exercise app on before the Nike app, both from the watch, no heart-rate has appeared on the activity summaries. I've tried the walking, running and other for the types, a few with the timer setting and a few with calories burned.

No luck thus far. But it gives me hope that Apple will allow Nike and other 3rd parties access to the heart rate and other native data gathered by the watch.

It sounds like you're using the Running part in the exercise app. What option? Time? Calories?

If I remember, I ran the Nike app from the phone and the Apple app from the watch. I only did it once or twice....but got the HR on the Nike.

I went for a run earlier and still no heart rate data in the Nike Running app.

Here are the steps I took:
1. Start Workout app on Watch. Select Outdoor Run w/ Open No Goal
2. Start Nike Running on Watch
3. Ran for a few miles
4. Stop Nike Running on Watch
5. Stop Workout app

Heart rate data is available in the iPhone Health app but nothing showing in Nike app. Attached are what I see in the Nike summary and source settings in Health app.

It's not a big deal that the heart rate data is not showing in Nike app but it does make me curious how it's showing for the OP.
