Mistranslation "charge iPhone alongside new AirPods case" -> "charge iPhone with new AirPods case" -> "charge iPhone using new AirPods case"

Seems most are already complaining it's too expensive, even without pricing announced.

Already have 2 on order.

When can we stop calling it wireless charging and start calling it induction charging? Are we going to have to actually wait for wireless charging to be a reality before people call it what it is?

I see your point, But in terms of marketing and being less technical, the consumer likely does _not_ understand what ‘induction charging’ means versus wireless charging. If you look at how tech manufacturers advocate/advertise wireless charging units, they want to express the freedom of wires, Thus why they refer to it as wireless charging. If they referred to as induction charging, it likely just would be more confusing and less appealing to the consumer for a sale.

What I want to know is can the current air pod case be charged wirelessly? Isn’t that what that metal strip on the back is for?
No, that metal is for the hinge only, if u want wireless charging u will have to buy new case coming soon. Just like the iPhone needed a new backing (glass) for wireless charging, the airpod case will need new design = get your wallet out.

The increase in case size to hold a battery sufficient enough to not only charge an iPhone, but wirelessly charge an iPhone... that is a big, heavy case that would completely negate the compact portability of the AirPods.

Imo, that report is just the result of a bad Google Translate.

I didn't imply it needs to charge the iPhone to 100%, just 10-20% would be enough for some tasks.

Plan ahead!
Get yourself a battery charging pack.

Oh, I agree, but not all people are organised.;)

2 words: WattUp Energous.
Trully wireless charging chips inside your iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch and your AirPods. The transmitters inside your “AirPod charger” trully wirelessly charge all 4 devices all day long from up to 15 feet away. It even charges your other electronic devices too such as remote controls, secure alarm door sensors, smoke detectors, hearing aids, baby toys, etc from up to 15 feet away too. The future is here!

It's the best term for the general public to use for describing charging without plugging/unplugging a cable into the phone every time you want to charge it.

Even an over-the-air charging system would require a base unit that requires to be plugged in anyway. Maybe in a few decades time, houses will be built that don't require cable feeds for sockets, lights, ovens, etc and every electricity consuming device in your house will be charged/powered straight from the electric meter. Who knows what that would do to our health though.

Still makes no sense at all. Apple isn't going to create a product offering a 10-20% charge. Even IF (I think we can agree they wouldn't) they did, the increase in size of the 398 mAh battery needed to make that 10-20% charge happen would still increase the size and weight of the AirPod case. Only the most edge case scenario would benefit from a 10-20% charge. It's simply not practical from a business case. My opinion of course, but yeah, no.

Oh, I don't that is correct, but perhaps someone with a better understanding of Physics can confirm.

I'm an electrical engineer and I work with inductors on a daily basis. I can confirm.

Induction charging is bi-directional so theoretically it could go either way; AirPods charge iPhone or iPhone charge AirPods. Just tell them which one is doing what.

If your iPhone dies and you need to make a call you can likely get at least enough charge from the AirPods to make a couple of calls or send/receive some texts or run GPS for a few seconds.
Don't think they could put beefy-enough driver transistors in either the AirPod or iPhone cases to make a strong-enough field for effective charging.

Instead I would love to see an iPhone charge another iPhone just by placing them back to back. at least enough juice to wake up a dead iPhone. Call it iLifeLine ;)

Or it will be a new "mat", i.e. extra reason to buy AirPods if you have an iPhone 8/X (and Watch 3)
Like that idea, but rather than "mat" maybe "puck" would be a better name for it, given the size/shape of the AirPods case?

A watch charging puck with a lightning socket (as opposed to a hardwired USB cable) has been discussed here before. Something like this:

So instead of a small single-purpose puck as above, the AirPods case would become one whenever a powered lightning cable is attached. Magnets could help it snap onto the back of whatever device needed to be charged (watch or iPhone)

I pictured a charging mat the size of a twin mattress
Room to charge an Apple car? Just don't run over your iPhone :D

Wow, that’s disappointing.

All these analysts and not one can think that maybe you could sit your iPhone facing down with the AirPods on top....

Because Apple doesn't design iPhones to be placed face down on surfaces. Try that with an X and see how fast the super soft screen is completely scratched.

I'm certain something got lost in translation here...
I'm sure they mean that the charging mat delivered with the airPod-case will also be able to charge an iPhone.
Apple will never supply a charging mat with any product unless that is the only way to charge the device.
Of there is a wired option, the charging mat will always be a cost option.

Always remember how people derided Micro$oft, pitty there wasn't an equivalent for A$$le :D

A translation error surely.
“Charge your iPhone with your AirPod case.”
meaning,
“Charge your iPhone along side your AirPod case.”
