Nikon DSLR question

Hello,

I have some questions about Nikon D90:

1) Micro mode: I don't know how to use it, i use the mode to close up (the one with flower), but it's still blurry do I need spical lens? i have the 18-105mm lens kit.

2) what is this for:

The macro mode isn't necessarily going to guarantee good macros. At minimum focus distance, maximum focal length and maximum aperture, your depth of field could be shallow enough where some movement would cause your subject to be out of focus.

Also, the item in question is a lens hood, for blocking out flare and hopefully adding some lens protection.
