Animal Crossing

I'm not even a fan of it but I'd suspect Animal Crossing for iOS would be enough to put Nintendo back in the black... AND THINK OF ALL THE MICROTRANSACTIONS

Dare i say it. Nintendo should come up with their own phone. Have it android based. But includ the Nintendo eshop so you can download gb and gba games and snes and n64 titles. Keeping it childhood friendly they could have loads of patrental control options.

I really don't want to play a Nintendo games on ios. Playing sonic on ios is already a nightmare.

That's what they should do if the 3DS fails, which isn't in any danger of happening anytime soon. It's still selling by the boatloads.

What's suffering is the WiiU, and that's mostly because Nintendo never has had much 3rd party support in the console space since the N64.

Actually, it is. Seriously.

I'd pay a premium price for Mario and Zelda on iOS. But I won't buy Nintendo hardware to play.

Completely agree with you. And if rockstar can make an almost perfect port of gta 3, vice city and SA Nintendo can most certainly start porting over some classics. They could make $$$$$$$$

If Nintendo can offer Pokemon for $10 on an iPhone... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

They would make tons of money because there's a lot of people who formerly played Pokemon but wont bother to fork out $150 for a 3DS and play the newer games.

Why can't they just make a proper, up to date console to compete?

Completely agree. It's one thing to attempt to innovate and spearhead a new movement but there comes a time when they just have to realize that what they're doing isn't working

Difference, SEGA thrived on mediocre titles and marketing, they never made any good software or hardware.

Nintendo on the other hand, has a deep history of incredible Hardware and Software.

I almost choked when I read this. Wow... SEGA mediocre titles? Really? I don't remember that.

Nintnedo has a very Japanines gaming market focus, where folks will buy a device for a single "killer" title. This is what drives Nintendo hardware sales, their limited line of "killer" software. This is where their corporate culture is stuck, and frankly almost Apple's undoing as well. If Apple hadn't so quickly opened up 3rd party application development iOS would have been put down HARD by Android. This is the current functional disparity between where Apple stands and where Nintendo stands. Funny enough both Nintendo and Apple seem to have issues with Cloud things. I mean really, this is warning to Apple, piss off your 3rd party Devs and you may still lose, big time.

Nintendo is a Toy Maker. That's what they pigeonholed themselves into. They make Nintendo band toys, only these toys are like several hundered dollar single function or maybe triple function toys. This was fine until mobile technologies blew past Nintendo's R&D. They now make underpowered electronic toys and try to sell them for more then better performatting and more functional hardware/software in nearly identical form factor. The only advantage (and it really is whats keeping them aflot) they have is what remains in their game development, those "killer apps".

Watch, if Smash Brothers WiiU doesn't absolutely suck, the WiiU will get a sudden boost in sales. At least in the Asian makets and some overseas. It will for a momment out Nintnedo into the Black there, and keep fueling their boom-bust cycle between Nintendo "Apps".

The question is how many Poke'Manz and SmashBros will it take to keep Nintendo profitable and off the Investor Ghoul's chopping block. I mean EA's been milking various sub-par sports franchises for years now, and they don't even make hardware with markups that make Apple pricing look like Dell's. Imagine if you could only play Madden NFL or FIFA on an EA-matron (only with better quality and less blatant ripoff level copy paste).

I think I would be happier with Nintendo if they actually released some brand new content. There's like a bazillion Mario and Pokemon games, and I have no interest playing them anymore. Something all new might interest me.

Not so fast "Nintendo fans", 3DS still did great, being the best sold console of last year and Pokemon X and Y was one of the best selling games of December (or the year, I forget).

The loss is obviously on the Wii U side of things. They have to start delivering with their hardcore games (legend of Zelda, Starfox, F-Zero, Metroid, etc.)
Nokia was still the best selling brand, did great, and symbian was one of the best selling OS ... just a few years ago.

The answer seems obvious: Nintendo phone.

Bundle a few killer games, web browser, popular social media apps etc.

Unlike Windows or Blackberry, the phone would have core unique selling points: killer games.

At least, that is what I think.

AND THINK OF ALL THE MICROTRANSACTIONS

For god's sake... Mario invented the coin!!!!! You wouldn't even have to change the playability of a Mario game. He would want to collect coins. Either mine them in-game, or simply by them via IAP. Brilliant! Do you know how much money Nintendo could make their first year selling iOS games?

100 coins for a free life never sounded so good!

Yes!!

Tim, please work out an exclusive deal with Nintendo.

This would be awesome. Make it for the iOS and Mac OSX. This would give Apple a much needed boost against Android in the mobile space, and give it more credibility in the PC gaming space.

A lot of kids getting their first phone would want a system that can play Nintendo games. Their parents would also trust the Nintendo name and probably even can relate to them due to memories from their own childhood.

What about Sonic and Dreamcast?

In the end, Nintendo has to admit the following: for the company to survive, they have to start supporting other companies' hardware platforms.

And there's only one choice for quality gaming: the iPad, especially the iPad models that use the A7 system on a chip (SoC). Given the power of the A7 SoC, especially the M7 motion sensing circuitry, it could make for fantastic ports of Nintendo games running on the iPad Air and 2G iPad mini. And games like the current Pokémon X & Y could take full advantage of Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) to interact between iPads in gaming situations.

Animal Crossing could be absolutely HUGE on mobile devices. Nintendo could probably even get away with a subscription model. They could definitely do In-App-Purchases big time, but they would be wise not to make things exclusive to additional purchases. (IE, make things earnable for free as well as for purchase.)

I purchased the latest Animal Crossing and while I have stopped playing a lot, it is only because the 3DS is my son's and we haven't picked up another one yet. If we could play on iOS, my wife, son and I would all play regularly I think.

I own a Wii U. Do you know why I held out on buying one for so long and why Nintendo hasn't gotten any money from me since? It's because THEY HAVE NO GAMES! They have six freaking studios and nothing to show for it! They haven't even previewed any upcoming games!

Borrowing a line from Iron Man, They're a Game Company Not Making Games! It's not freaking rocket science. There's no defense for Nintendo - they have a huge catalog of franchises to call upon and revisit and they're sitting on all of them. Make a freaking sequel to ANY of them! Use the same damn engine - who cares? I don't need anything revolutionary - it doesn't need to be beautiful, it needs to be fun. Which I realize isn't the easiest thing, but it seems like the only thing harder than that when you have such a talented team of game makers is to NOT MAKE GAMES, but somehow they're managing it.

Porting their old games to iOS would be a complete disaster. That's quite possibly the worst choice they could make, as they'd trash their reputation the way SEGA has. iOS is not a viable platform for most of their games, besides maybe Pokemon, because touch controls really don't fly in platformers built for d-pads or joysticks.
