I don’t hate the idea of and I appreciate all the work that went into it, the curation, the spoiler toggle… but also fear they’ll start takedowns on YT playlists, and I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t just dump their stuff on apple music or Spotify and make a ton of easy money. Why go through all this?

Same reason Apple goes to a lot of seemingly unnecessary trouble. To maintain control.

This is the only right approach to piracy. Give people what they want on reasonable terms.

People who like Nintendo enough to want this probably already have the sub, and if not it's just one more thing they can add to the list of benefits. The list of benefits they'll point to when the price inevitably increases.

ok...why though?
Because why not

I mean, sure, there are many other streaming music services that have sprang up over the years like Spotify, Pandora, etc, but the problem is that while these have covers of their music, they really don't have the true OSTs for various reasons

Nintendo is out here launching anything BUT the Switch 2!

On a side note, it sure would be cool to see an Apple portable game system at some point. I know they probably would never do it but it’s just cool to imagine a little M4 Max powered system that can play all the games from both iOS and Mac OS and connects to Apple TV to play on the big screen.
Have you seen all the hate Sony is getting for pricing the PS5 Pro at a measly $699.99? Apple would be crucified for their gaming hardware prices and they know it.

This is so sick, I hope they add more games soon. For now I’m content just with yoshi’s island, animal crossing, starfox and DK 😌

What’s strange though is it requires a Nintendo online account. And I HIGHLY doubt anyone will be signing up for an account to use this service. It’s going to be used by people who already pay monthly for NSO.
So to forgo passive easy money on other platforms, they’re spending money to… not earn more money… 🤷‍♂️
It adds stickiness to having a paid Nintendo account.

Unless I'm mistaken, the vast majority of people with paid Nintendo accounts are signed up for the old games from the N64 and earlier on the Switch. Once you grow bored of playing all those games though... why keep paying for your account?

Nintendo just added a reason - it keeps your ability to use this Nintendo Music app.

Having said that, meh. I can't imagine wanting to listen to exclusively Nintendo music for any extended time - I'd want to mix in other music into my playlist.

Anyways, I'm sure Nintendo will try this out and see what happens to their paid account retention rate. If it doesn't appear to improve the retention rates at all, maybe they'll try your suggestion and just start making money off of official streams on Spotify and other sources.

I'm not sure how Nintendo can launch a new service in the EU without opening it up for everyone.

Could this be a precursor to the EU officially mandating that Switch apps be run under MacOS ?

Their legal team spends half its time nuking videos that feature Nintendo music on YouTube so it’s probably one of the only places you can reliably listen to it now.

i remember a few years ago on Twitter their account tweeted “what’s your favourite Nintendo game song?” And scrolling through the 1000+ replies, literally every single reply with a YouTube video in it had been taken down after.

Honestly this is a pleasant surprise. Just wish they had more song like the older Zelda song. The Mario Kart songs are catchy. No Mario Galaxy 2 yet.

Great start, but they really need to broaden the catalog quickly. Only 2 Zelda games in the mix? No Kid Icarus or F-Zero? Even Mario is pretty short on titles.

My only hypothesis is that they can only do this for IPs that they own or directly control, so make it a selling point of NSO and cut out the “Middleman”. I also agree that we will see YT takedowns in the future, so better download any Niche songs you like now.

Nintendo, with Koji Kondo being their primary pioneer, produced amazing soundtracks over the last 30 years. They're wonderful to listen to for lifelong fans who need some help concentrating in adulthood.

Nintendo is extremely careful about their IP. After the disaster that was the first Super Mario movie in the 90s, they relied on no one but themselves for distribution. The animated Super Mario movie were signs that things are changing, but I think it'll be a long long time before they distribute their IP in another 3rd party medium other than their own.

I guess I sorta just assumed all the popular Nintendo Music was already on Apple Music or Spotify or something.

Wake me up when Nintendo licenses a Switch emulator exclusively on iOS and macOS. "Nintendo comes to Apple Arcade" is the news I want to read.

Not a gamer, not a subscriber, but for anyone confused about why, that's alluded to in the article...

The app's release comes as Nintendo has taken a stricter stance on unofficial uploads of its music to platforms like YouTube, indicating this may be part of a strategy to provide official access to its game soundtracks.

First an alarm clock and now a music streaming service?

I don't see the point of either, but I love the "outside the box" thinking by Nintendo.

The world is a better place when not every company is run by beancounters and management consultants.

I bought the alarm clock and have a Nintendo Online sub. And this music service is a nice plus.

The point for me is … this stuff just make me happy.

Ninetendo is famous for being extremely, impossibly selective of what mediums they release their content. They only just recently ventured back into Hollywood after the disaster that was the 1990's Super Mario film.

Us Nintendo fans are happy to hear that there's finally some legitimate way to listen to the brilliant music they produce, pioneered by the wonderful Koji Kondo.

Nintendo is adding value to their Online Service. The music is exclusive to those members and not meant to be publicly available in other services like Spotify

At the same time, Apple sells how many $1,000 phones and $2,000 laptops? Tim has his clientele well trained as far as price tolerance goes.
