Nintendo today announced that its next iOS and Android release will be Dr. Mario World, an action puzzle game set to be released later in 2019. Nintendo will be partnering with messaging app LINE to develop the new title.

Little detail is available on the new game at this time, but Dr. Mario was a 1990 puzzle game that tasked players with rearranging different colored pills as they fall to clear them off of the game board and eliminate viruses.

The gameplay of the original title was similar to Tetris, and it should translate well to mobile devices.

Nintendo says that Dr. Mario World will be free to play with in-app purchases, with Nintendo aiming to release the game in "early summer 2019" in Japan, the United States, and dozens of other countries.

Dr. Mario World may be Nintendo's first game of 2019, as its other title, Mario Kart Tour, won't be coming out until the summer. It was originally scheduled to launch right around March.

Nintendo has released five mobile games thus far, four of which have been free-to-play and three of which have been highly successful. Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Dragalia Lost are current free-to-play titles, while Miitomo, Nintendo's first mobile game, is now defunct. Nintendo's only paid app so far has been Super Mario Run.

OMG! How is this game even being developed? The current state of affairs makes this games choice of theme all the more galling. With the opioid crisis in full swing why would someone offer a game that will obviously be a gateway to someone stealing their mom's Ambien. Did we learn nothing from Rush Limbaugh's hearing loss from OxyContin? Seriously, what's wrong with the world? Dr. Nathan Poe proved conclusively that games about pills lead to real addiction with real pills. He's written many peer reviewed papers on the subject matter.

I'm starting a Change.org petition to get this game banned before it even debuts. Who's with me? I'm pretty sure Nathan Poe will sign on. A game about pills? The creators should be in jail.

What equals success? 10 million downloads but low use and low retention, or 10,000 downloads with cult following of 9,900 retention and use? Even Combat from Atari 2600 was more fun. For YEARS.

I don’t pay money for iOS games normally but the nostalgia factor will get me to stump up for this.
Well done Nintendo I’m pretty sure you’re on to a business winner here.

Rename your site to Nintendo Rumors. Seriously, I like Nintendo but I don’t see news for all the other game devs.

I’m sure this game could be fun, but don’t fall for its message. Big pharma has their tentacles in everything.

Pharma and the American baby food industry put pressure on US government to threaten to apply trade sanctions on several South American countries the time they were about to commence a combined national billboard effort in their own countries to promote breastfeeding. They had no option but to back down one by one.

Consistently, the healthiest people I know avoid automatically running to take a tablet when something comes along. The unhealthiest people I know go by pharma’s tablet-for-everything philosophy. They way they promote these tablets you’d almost think it made them money. A fever in a young person is typically followed by a growth spurt, suggesting some of these so called sicknesses are a natural part of life. Eat well and think before you tablet. It’s nice they are there, but consider tablets always as your last resort option, avoiding whenever you can.

Enjoy your game!

Do they eat healthy mushrooms to grow up big and strong while jumping around and punching brick blocks?

If it will be another LINE dependent game, then NO THANK YOU. Line has got a tendencies to make them account dependable and they very often just discontinue games

LINE developer making a game? Why not spend a little bit more money and hire a game developer?

LINE IS a game developer. They’ve released a number of games, including many in Asia that were never localized to English. For one the Disney Tsum Tsum game they made is hugely successful and popular. Plus LINE is a Japanese company so easy for Nintendo to work with.

I want to watch you play this with touch controls.
Couple things:
- if people can play Fortnite, the old GTA games, and other titles with touch controls it’s entirely possible though maybe not ideal.
- I’ve long said Nintendo should make an iPhone case with controls and release old games on iOS. Sell the case, sell the games. Boom.

Heck, I’d pay good money for super Mario 64 ported.

If you want a subpar mobile port of Mario 64, that already exists - Mario 64 DS. That game was majorly gimped by the DS's lack of a joystick. Now you want to replace all the physical controls it did have for just a touchscreen?

I'm really disappointed that 12 years after the original iPhone, we still have made no progress on being able to actually feel where virtual controls on a touchscreen are...

The iPhone is almost half as old as I am... does that make me old? It feels weird.
