It mildly concerns me a bit that many people who enjoy Apple's platforms generally think that Nintendo is 'mad' not releasing their catalog (both current and classic) on iOS or Android, and that it is only a matter of time before they see (said person's version of) common sense.

It's like an assumption and unfounded expectation that they should - and in some cases like a personal insult that they are not.

Lets make this clear (even though the point has been made before), Nintendo's current and classic catalog (with the exception of those games explicitly designed for mobile - and the few other titles that naturally adapt to touch) best suit Nintendo AND the consumer experience on their traditional, dedicated, and in some cases very unique hardware console environments that they developed specifically for that purpose.

iOS gaming is fine for a certain type of game, but anyone with a semi in-depth experience of Nintendo games know those games would be a significantly sub-par experience on mobile platforms. *And even if they did work perfectly* Nintendo has NO obligation whatsoever to ever make them available to anyone who doesn't want to buy their hardware. Why the heck should they if it their prerogative to do things a different way?

Usually people state Nintendo's 'madness' as ignoring the huge revenue that would amount from dumping the catalog on Apple's and Android's eco-systems.

Shockingly and (maybe) naively I believe Nintendo to be one of few mega corporations who do not *entirely* base their decisions around monetarily concerns - but at least in part consider the experience first.

I do not believe mobile will ever be a particularly ideal home for their core games (even with proper MFi controller support) and I see no reason the masses should be assuming they will get their (imo) misguided wish.

In other words, if the Nintendo experience appeals to you and you can gather the money - buy a bloody Switch already. Otherwise stop expecting the best of Nintendo's **** to come your way. Rant, rant rant - yeah I know.

Get a switch.

Sure. I agree. But giving 30% to Apple. Stuff that.
And carry around yet another device that only does one thing when my phone does everything and more than have the capability to run these games. I travel very light.

I agree with you that Nintendo is the most likely of the 3 console hardware makers to care about quality of their products as relates to how games play.

Microsoft will put anything on an Xbox One and PC but, of course, you can use the same controller and Xbox Live for both.

I know that the N64 controller likely wouldn’t work on a phone, or the Game Cube etc.

Miyamoto would likely balk at straight ports of anything he ever made for the sake of money. I get all of that.

I’m just saying the market would definitely exist for more Nintendo product.

By way of agreeing with you I am positively sick of how certain major console makers and publishers have pushed their old libraries with ads in game, forced IAP and the like.

My final argument for porting more legacy content though is if you don’t put out a legitimate way to play it on download stores or apps the pirate/emulator market is just going to steal it if people still want to play it.

I have been saying his for years, but I think both Apple and Nintendo could benefit from a virtual console type app on the ATV. But only classic games, such as the games on the NES Classic edition.

I don't think it would cause a loss of sales with the switch, due to it only being retro console games. They could have a similar price structure to the classic console games on the Wii and WiiU.

It would be just pure profit! Even if each game was sold for $1-2 it’s all profit. We’re talking about 20-30+ year old games that many gamers have bought several times. First on the original consoles, then on the Gameboy Advance and DS, the Wii, etc. I understand them keeping new first party titles exclusive to the Switch but their legacy catalog should be entirely available on mobile by now.

Then travel light - but why expect to have access to everything if you do. Wishing to be minimalist used to demand compromise - and it still does actually - but I think we are little spoilt by the do-it-all-gadget-age into a false illusion that it doesn't - and there is nothing wrong with Nintendo as a company not buying into that philosophy at the expense of their product integrity. Also there is nothing wrong with you not buying the Switch because you like to travel light - but accept that mean's no top-of-class Nintendo games when you do travel.

It's like: I'd like to play some Sony games - but I have a Switch and I'm not prepared to buy a PS4. Therefore I can consider it damn inconvenient that Sony won't release Uncharted on my Switch, or I can respect Sony's right to not let me play Uncharted if I'm not prepared to buy a playstation.

Fair enough. Well then you don't mind missing out on some games to travel light.
