    Hello,

I've just received my new Mac Pro 2013.

I notice that there is a small clicking sound when waking from sleep - it's subtle, similar to a hard drive noise.

Just wondering if anyone else can confirm, and what is it - I assume it's the fan starting.

Other than that it's mostly silent.

    Thanks!

Can anyone else with a nMP confirm this sound?

I only seems to happen if the computer has been asleep for a while.

    Thanks.

I have had mine for a few days now, and hear no such noise when awakening from sleep.

Can you localize it, put your ear on the 'box' and see if the sound is from the top?

    Thanks for your replies.

The sound appears to come from the top - i.e the fan area.

It's is only if the machine has slept for a while and the fan is turned off. It sounds similar to a HD waking up - but obviously it isn't!

Sounds like I may have a problem then!

Maybe, I'm not describing the noise accurately, does any one hear - anything - when they wake from sleep.

Note, I only hear the sound when the fans have fully stopped and the nMP has been asleep for a while.

I don't have mine yet. But I have a theory what you here: The ball bearing when the fan starts.. If others don't hear it it probably is defective. But it's hard to say without actually hearing it.

Yes, your theory sounds about right to me. It sounds mechanical, unless others can confirm the sounds I guess I'll have assume it's defective.

For all previous models it was completely normal sound. Relay in PSU clicks when switches power on/off. IDK whether in nMP this should be audible or not.

Interesting, it's not a single click though, and it's odd no-one else is hearing it.

    Thanks!

Hi guys, I know this thread is a little old, but thought I'd chime in. I have experienced a tiny clicky sound when the fan spins up from cold boot or sleep, but the room has to be dead quiet to hear it. Considering most fans make similar sounds in other devices, I wouldn't worry about it. Obviously if you can't shake the concern, certainly send it back.

Must be the fan since its the only moving part and TBH i would expect some kind of noise on start up after being stationary

The only concern I would have is if a wire is touching the fan blades and you hear it hitting the fan as it spins up but then don't hear it as the fan speeds up because it is out of our frequency range. In the long run, that wire will break.

    Just a theory.

Yes, I have the same noise when I awake mine from a full sleep. I wasn't and still not sure if it is the Pegasus r4 of the nMP. I knew the noise was there, but never really stopped to think about it. I will keep an eye out next time and let you know.

I believe that is the fan that you are hearing. I noticed that mine sometimes has some very faint sounds like that coming from the fan as it wakes up. In the old Mac Pro that would be the relays used to power up the machine, but as far as I can tell there aren't any relays in this computer.

Not the nMP, but I occasionally get a very quiet click or tap noise when my 2012 Macbook Air wakes from sleep. It's quiet enough that it took ages for me to track down what it was.

Mine makes a faint noise as well when waking up from sleep. Very similar to the sound of an external HDD. It only lasts briefly. It sticks out because otherwise the machine is so silent.

I have a slight sound too... almost sounds like an old-school hard drive chirping
