nMP Ethernet

Hi All,

I’m sure this will end up being an idiotic question, but I couldn’t seem to find a suitable answer out there.

I’ve got a 2013 nMP and both ethernet ports aren’t working. I can connect via WiFi, but regardless of the cable, I get no action in either ethernet jack. All I’m trying to figure out is what type of ethernet adaptor I’m going to need and if I can replace it myself. I’m not ridiculously tech savvy but I’d rather save the money and avoid sending it in to Apple for a repair. Any help is much appreciated from the wise folks here! Thanks.

The easiest option would be to get an apple thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter. I use one in work and they're plug and play.

When you open network setting in system preferences is there any Ethernet listed?

Does Ethernet work in recovery mode (eg. can you ping anything from Terminal)?

Do you have a working DHCP server? What do you see when you show IP configuration in terminal? (This would be the command ipconfig in Windows or ifconfig in *nix.)

Perhap your DHCP server is in the wireless router and it's only working for WiFi connections. (169.254.x.y is a sign that there is no DHCP server.)

Another check - are the link lights up for the ports on the router?

ps: A "DHCP server" assigns IP addresses (and routing info) to a system - without valid info the system will come up but the network won't be able to connect.

Not sure what you've done via troubleshooting...

- check system information to see if the interfaces show up there
- system prefs / network / remove then add the interfaces & test
