    Hi everyone,
i'm a first time poster on this forum, for the first time i purchased an Apple computer so i'm still getting used to the machine.

I have the latest MacPro 6-core factory model, when i was doing some cleaning on my desk i noticed that the macpro was making a zooming sound when in sleep mode...the thing is that when i put the computer to sleep the fan keeps going for a short while and then stops, after the fan has stopped there is still a zooming electrical kind of noise coming from the computer, the zoom goes on for like 40 seconds and then also stops...strange thing is that its not every time, sometimes it keeps zooming for a little while and sometimes it goes straight to complete silence after the fan has stopped.

So to be clear, the zooming does not continue it stops after max. a minute. To hear the zoom you really need to put your ear on top of the fan..

Does this sound like a defect or problem or is this completely normal...? What component could this be that is still making the zooming noise?

Also, i noticed there is a firmware update out there for the nmp that handles some sleep mode problems but when i try to install it the dialogue box says it can't be installed on my computer.

I feel kind of stupid to contact apple for this so i thought i'd ask here first

Sounds like this is related to the "power nap" function and is likely perfectly normal. Power nap allows the Mac to perform tasks while in a low-power mode, which includes checking mail, running backups, etc.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5394

You can do what it says to disable power nap and see if the sound stops.

I don't think this has anything to do with power nap since its not turned on...like i said, it only happens sometimes and when it does happen the zoom goes away after like 1 minute max...then it just stops zooming and the computer is then completely quit...it sounds as if the power supply is still running or something...

OK, you're contradicting yourself or you're confused.

In your original post you said this happens when it's in sleep mode (You said this multiple times) and here you're saying it's when it's not turned on. Which is it?

Are you going to :apple: -> Shut Down...
    Or :apple: -> Sleep
    Or...?

At this point you're saying two completely different things. In sleep mode (and power nap) it will LOOK like it's not turned on when it's in low-power sleep mode. It is not powered off in this state and wakes quickly when you press a key on the keyboard.

If it's actually powered off then when you use it again you would be going through the power-on chime, boot logo, logging back in, etc.

So...which is it? And can you describe the sound a little better than a "zooming" sound? :)

Except you're not the OP...or are you?

When it's in sleep mode then it IS turned on but is in a low-power mode. Power nap lets it wake slightly to perform certain tasks, but there is a big difference between it being powered off (Not turned on) and asleep.

    So...

    - If you're the OP under a different account then why?
    - If you're not the OP and have the same sound then that tells me this is likely a common sound.

    And...

You updated your post to say that "power nap" is enabled when you said before it was disabled. Which is it? This whole thread is screwy.

Thank you for trying to help!

Well i have external drives attached to my macpro, and for some reason when putting the macpro to sleep while the external drives are still running, it produces either a ticking sound or a zooming sound....soon as you turn off the external drive, even while in sleep mode the macpro goes completely silent...

Tried the exact same thing on the other macpro and it made the same noise....

    Strange isn't it:confused:

Indeed, glad you were able to locate what was triggering it though.
