How do you know? I thought it was automatic, like if your internet speeds can stream HD you would get HD or am i wrong?

Yeah. First iPad here and was definitely looking forward to 1080p streaming over wifi, but I suspect that Netflix will upgrade.
I'm tried watching a few movies to test it out. It works that way like you said on consoles/blu-ray players/set top boxes but doesn't do it for the iPad!

Yep, just tested this. Tried getting as close as I could to the same second on the new iPad and the original. You'll see there really isn't an appreciable difference between the two at all.
And the movie in question is in HD and I'm on a 20mbps cable modem connection.

Dazed and Confused. 1993. There is no concept as not being filmed in HD. Ordinary film stock has always been HD.
Just for S&G watch a movie that was made in the last few years. Maybe that might look better? Not sure but worth a shot!
