There will be a new iMac in 2019, probably 2nd quarter (could be a little earlier, or a little later).
It might feature a redesigned enclosure, but my guess is "probably not", because the iMac enclosure is "sleek enough as it is" without needing "change for the sake of change".
Look at the 2018 Mini -- externally, nearly identical to the 2012/2014 versions, but nicely upgraded internal components. That's what counts.

Even though every prediction and claim of divine knowledge by the self-proclaimed geniuses on this forum about a redesigned iMac have been worthless, I agree that mid-2019 is the likely time for a some type of update, as it will have been two years from the previous releases.

Indeed. I bought my 2017 iMac just last month and it's absolutely ideal for all of my requirements: day-to-day Web browsing, Word, Excel. Image editing through Photoshop Elements. Video editing through iMovie. Very demanding games/simulations like X-Plane 11. It does everything at a very acceptable level of performance, although I do have an internal and external SSD. It's also the centrepiece of my high resolution audio system.
I did upgrade from my Late-2012 Mac mini to an iMac as I had lost hope in Apple bringing out a new Mac mini, but they did in the end! However, I'm more than happy with the iMac. It looks very tidy, saves a bit of desk space and only needs a single power socket.

Yep, I got my 2017 iMac this past June and upgraded from a 2011 15" MacBook Pro. Very satisfied. (I do have a high-end gaming PC too, but do all of my actual daily computing and work on my Mac.)
Got you both beat. My 2008 original unibody MacBook Pro is limping (and I mean limping) along.
As mentioned above, my 2008 MacBook Pro is limping along. It is three OS behind. Think I can go up one, but do not want to take the performance hit.
I am debating a mid range Mac mini to hold me over till the iMac refresh. And then repurpose the Mac mini as a local media server as I have today in a 2010 Mac mini.
My guess is mid 2019 before we see a newly redesigned form factor.
This will allow enough time to have passed that current iMac Pro users won’t be as upset.

I personally wouldn't care if Apple would have redesign the iMac & iMac Pro the next day. While having a nice looking computer is nice to have, it's what is on the inside that matters to me. Putting thermodynamics issues aside, I think I would be more upset if all Apple did was to redesign the iMac and did no upgrades to the cpu and/or motherboard.
That is sort of my "problem". My iMac still works flawlessly 😛 It is not the fastest thing in the world any longer, but it still performs quite well for day-to-day computing. So I want a new iMac but I don't need one (in the literal sense of the word).
I would lean toward the predictions here of mid-2019, or even later. I know Apple has a lot of resources and tons of cash but they've been putting most of their focus into mobile computing, laptops, iPads and phones. Right now they appear to be happy steering the enterprise world toward the Mac mini. I can understand that. We'll see though.

Glad you made it clear you had the ‘aluminum’ model. My 2017 ‘cardboard’ iMac is really struggling. Think I’ll opt for the aluminum version next time.

I was ready to buy an upgraded iMac. When it wasn’t announced I ended up pulling the trigger on a refurbished iMac Pro. Unless the upgrade comes in November I doubt I’ll regret it bacause if it doesn’t it probably won’t be upgraded until late next year. I dint want to wait that long.

I was surprised when Apple didn't update the iMac, especially with it being the 30th anniversary earlier this year. My only guess is that they are working on a redesign, maybe for next year. Maybe a iMac update would go like this:
Reduced bezels (especially since Apple have done it on all the other devices)
Faster processors and graphics - obviously this is a given
New Space grey colour
T2 or T3 chip
True Tone display

I think bezels won‘t be reduced, because if so, they would‘ve done it with iMac Pro. What iMac will get is the thermal redesign. About T2/T3 chip and SSD only - look at the new Mac mini! That‘s a sign of things to come, and Apple‘s war on spinning drives continues...

"War on spinning drives". Now that's funny! They should have done away with those compromised fusion drives more than a few years ago. They got rid of spinning drives in laptops back in 2013 for god's sakes.
Then, when they 'updated' the fusion drives in iMacs a couple generations ago they actually made the SSD portion smaller!!!!
So it's less a 'war' and more like a slow, stumbling reaction to the fact that the storage tech in their iMacs (and Mac mini) has been pathetically out of date for years. 😳
You‘re right, but if consumers see competitors with 1 or 2 TB of albeit slow storage, and then a brand new iMac with 128 GB of ridiculously fast storage, they‘ll always opt for more storage, so the competitor. FD was a great compromise between fast boot times (bc of SSD portion) and lots of storage. Only nerds like us care about the SSD storage size to be honest 😉

But the extra ‘speed’ of apples ssds is pretty much useless in everyday use. The big jump from ssds comes from almost instant access times, not hellacious read speeds. My daughters laptop has a standard 2.5 inch crucial ssd while mine has a 2000mbs blade ssd and the boot times, launch of apps, etc are almost identical.
Apple’s proprietary pursuit of unneccsarily fast ssd’s only helps with huge file transfers. It also makes them insanely expensive.
Also, you wont be doing many ‘huge’ file transfers with your puny 128gb ssd anyway.

How is the 2017 imac pro doesn’t matter anymore in 2019. So the imac probably will get a redesign in and out
These redesigns cost a lot of money. Why should they go with yet another design when a clearly superior one already exists? It does not make much sense to me, first differentiating between iMac and iMac Pro, just to spoil the inferior model with better/redesigned ideas. It would be more feasible to redesign both machines in one swoop, that wonˋt be happening after just one iMac Pro revision IMO. Aside the thermals, what would you like to see redesigned in iMac? Aesthetics?

There are so many different directions that Apple can take this between the imac, imac pro and the mac pro. Time will tell, but don't be surprised if our predictions are way off the end result or the timing.
