There is no reason to have 4K support on the current generation Apple TV as most content is not yet available in 4K. By the time mainstream 4K content becomes available, Apple will be prepared.
Wrong way to think about it - Apple could drive the adoption of 4K by the general public by supporting 4K on the new box, and pushing the content providers to provide 4K streams. Just like iTunes, there could be a slightly higher cost per month for the higher resolution content. If they don't include 4K support, even with no content at release, then I'm going to be very disappointed with their lack of leadership. They need to lead rather than follow the competition!
As for TV prices, you can get 4K devices for the same as 1080 sets from last year. Prices are dropping fast, which is all the more reason for Apple to get out in front on this.
