Earlier today, Japanese blog Mac Otakara claimed that Apple will be holding an "unusual" event in February, backtracking somewhat on its earlier claim of an early February iPad 3 event.

The Loop's well-connected Jim Dalrymple now reports that Apple will not hold an event in February, indicating that observers waiting for the iPad 3 or other major announcement from Apple will need to hold out until at least March.
This is not going to happen, according to my sources. Apple will not hold an event in February, unusual or otherwise. That's it.
Dalrymple has in the past quashed inaccurate rumors regarding Apple media events, and has proven to have reliable information.

Damn, that's the last time I schedule a month of work based on what an analyst says.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Endless rumors... Just don't pay attention, life your life, day after another like if was the last one and if you survive long enough you may have a surprise popin-up as a new iDevice was born last nigth at Cupertino nursery... Then try to survive to get one for launch day and don't pay attention to Samsung Note users walking around trying to find a space in their pockets for their precious ;)

Enjoy your life ! Propagate love and not rumors ;)

There is the annual shareholders meeting on February 23.

My guess is that Apple is planning on announcing that is will begin paying a dividend to its shareholders at that meeting.

Maybe this is the reason for the confusion...

Haha, what's ironic is that these rumors and letdowns won't end this year. They will be there every year as long as Apple exists! :D

I was hoping for a new iMac... Any guesses on when that might be?

Sooner than May. It's had a life cycle of considerably less than a year for at least five cycles now. The past two cycles were exactly 280 days, which will have elapsed by next Tuesday. End of March at the latest, I'd say. I am in your situation though; I've got the money and am just waiting on the refresh to make my biggest investment in a Mac since my 2005 PowerBook G4.

I certainly hope you are correct. Since the future of the mac pro is uncertain the iMac seems to be my only mac option if they pull the plug on the mac pro line. The waiting is somewhat painful as I am on a '06 mac pro tower that is circling the toilet.

we should at least be getting an invitation sent out this month right? right?

I can probably manage ipad-less to the end of March, but I'd like an indication of an event before the end of Feb.
