Sooner than May. It's had a life cycle of considerably less than a year for at least five cycles now. The past two cycles were exactly 280 days, which will have elapsed by next Tuesday. End of March at the latest, I'd say. I am in your situation though; I've got the money and am just waiting on the refresh to make my biggest investment in a Mac since my 2005 PowerBook G4.

I doubt it will come out in march. Ivy Bridge will most likely release in early april so it will be april the earliest unless apple deicides to keep sandy bridge which just doesn't make sense. Also the to be released AMD 7000 series which hasn't even come out in mobile gpu's probably will be around that timeframe.

Just a guess, and some researching don't hate me if i'm wrong. I would love to see an earlier date.

There is the annual shareholders meeting on February 23.

My guess is that Apple is planning on announcing that is will begin paying a dividend to its shareholders at that meeting.

Maybe this is the reason for the confusion...

I'll be in Cupertino at building 4 for the shareholders meeting on the 23rd so we'll see.

Hmm, which is it? lol

Your diagram is a little too clear, I'm going to need you to make those unidirectional arrows bidirectional. :)

That sucks. Now the fan boys have nothing to jerk off to in February. Well maybe they can at least be productive and make themselves useful this month.

Damn, that's the last time I schedule a month of work based on what an analyst says.

I like that answer. The whole secrecy thing is becoming a problem right about now. Developers don't really get any heads up for new iPads before anybody else. No way to know what is going to break, if the OS patch will drop... So they can start budgeting their time and money for a post-announcement coding blitz.

The one thing making iOS nice for devs has been a little bit of predictability... iPad in winter with new processor, iPhone in summer with a new iOS and features, iPod touch in the fall as the budget version. The new companies making all the money are running their releases just as fast as Apple can crank out the hardware. These waiting games do give time for devs to do housekeeping, but are also screwing around with employee time and budgets. Most of the really interesting stuff is written by companies with employees you can still count on fingers... Those guys are the only reason Mac in general is around... No point to screw around.
Everybody understands priduction problems. Pick a date for a vague announcement out a few more months and the right people will get the hint. A new iPad isn't really a secret anybody cares about except people playing Apple's stocks.

There's a big culture dissidence going on here as well. Big companies like Apple whip and drive everybody all the time. The first thing independants do is plan their LIFE and then schedule to get the work done in that time. That's how people are extremely productive and DON'T go crazy.

Sold my Ipad 2 in preperation, still have the money put aside. But in the meantime I picked up an Asus Transformer Prime and I'm loving the heck out of it, $499 plus $30 bucks more and I have 64GB of room, the Upgrade to Android 4.0 is really really nice and easy. I've uploaded 20 gb worth of music to google Music for free to listen on the device, and the longer I play with the prime it's making a case that I might be all I need. Plus Comics using Comicrack on the device is the best I've used. C'mon Apple Dont't wait too long.

No you are right. The length of time the product has been out has little meaning when Apple are on Intel's release cycle and their products continue to fly off the shelves.

I don't know if this has been pointed out, but it really seems Apple is cutting back on keynotes and events. Look at 2011... 3 keynotes/events only. No Mac hardware events at all, only the iPad 2, WWDC and the iPhone 4S.

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple had a fixed annual timetable of media events: Mac hardware in Feb, iPad in April, iPhone in June, iPod in Aug/Sept and Mac software in Oct.

Apple is starting to lose it.

Excuse me Apple, where the hell are new iMacs, laptops etc etc etc. It has been a looooong time since anything really new has been announced. Never mind the big iPhone 4S disappointment. I was something of an Apple evangelist in my rather large circle of friends. Now I am beginning to wonder. Recently bought a Samsun Galaxy S2. Don't regret it one second.

They just don't do keynotes for hardware refreshes anymore, they pop 'em on the website.

Their current hardware line-up is quite in-line with their usual refresh times, I don't see what you're getting at "new iMacs, laptops". These will come with Ivy Bridge most assurededly.

Excuse me Apple,

So tell Apple, rather than us.

iMacs were updated in May last year. Thats not actually that long ago.

It has been a looooong time since anything really new has been announced.

Thats quite some rock you live under.

Never mind the big iPhone 4S disappointment.

Says who? Apple are selling millions of the things. And im certainly not disappointed with mine.

Wow, I am, like, really impressed with your counter arguments. Wish I was that clever! You must be chief Apple shill on this board.

I think right now if Apple were to announce the iPad 3, it will do it on March 6 or 7, 2012--just a few days over one year after the iPad 2 was announced (it was unveiled March 2, 2011).
