I have a 13" MBP running Yosemite but when I try to get the apple logo by using SHIFT>OPTION + K on my macbook pro all I get is ̊ can anyone please help me or tell me where to find it in the character viewer please

Shift option k works for me . Option k gives me the degree symbol ˚. Have you tried both sets of option and shift keys (right and left)?

The shortcut is different depending on which language keyboard you use.

Shift + Option + K is the American shortcut. The UK one might be different.
I, for instance, have Option + $.

Either Google your way to it or experiment a bit. For this, you could use the Keyboard Viewer

shift option K is correct for a UK keyboard.
