Unlike Apple's iOS devices, Apple TV has no backup system, yet. The latest iTunes only shows two options when an Apple TV is connected. They are, Restore (as new) and Eject. Until backup is added and supported by Apple, there is no way to restore your previous settings, apps and data back to an Apple TV. Instead. settings must re-entered anew. Apps must must re-downloaded. Home screen icons must be moved around again. Even then, the previous configuration and progress on most apps will be lost.

Being able to backup is important. I suspect a future update will add this “feature” soon. But in the mean time...be careful.

What are you trying to back up? Contacts, photos, documents???????

Backing up and resorting is more trouble than moving a few icons around at this point.

They'd have to disable or remove the iCloud/iTunes backup portion of iOS in order to make tvOS. I definitely hope it comes back.

Preferences, settings, there's a slew of reasons it should have backup in the next major update. Don't dismiss it because you don't see the benefit yet.

Most people don't understand why they need a backup until they find out the hard way why they needed a backup.

An iCloud backup would be a nice feature to restore the TV. There isn't much data to backup, just settings, accounts and the position of app in the home screen. Apps can be downloaded from iTunes and apps download most of their content into cache, so no backup needed for that portion of the filesystem.
