I thought I would post this in case others have the same problem, I have suffered with this for at least 6 months, and finally found the solution today! I also did not see it documented anywhere.

When I would play videos in stories on Instagram, I had no audio. I checked all the obvious stuff, no luck. I finally stumbled on this, which doesn't make sense to me:

In Safari/Preferences/Websites/Autoplay, I had Instagram set to Never auto play media. Now, doesn't that mean never AUTO play it? It doesn't mean "don't ever play audio, even when I click to play it"? Anyway, I changed the setting to "Allow All Auto Play", and audio works! If you remove the entry there, and at the bottom the default is set to "Never auto play", that won't play audio either.

Unless there is some other underlying setting that causes this, it's illogical but it solves the problem.

i did not have instagram in the preferences settings; but i went to IG, and in the site settings in the safari menubar, i turned on "allow all auto-play"... and that worked. thanx!

that may work for you, but i don't have instagram in those settings, yet still, 99% of the time, IG stories audio does not play here (safari). so i'ts not that simple...

I think the is the problem @fisherking - if it's not in the list, it uses the default - which you can see at the bottom, but it's likely "Never auto play". So when you bring up Instagram on the Safari/Mac, click Safari/Settings for this web site in the menu bar, I bet you see AutoPlay:Never auto play. Click it, and choose "Allow All Auto Play". It will now be in the list, and audio will play!
