Hello,

(Mac Pro 5,1 with 10.10.5 Yosemite).

Can anyone help regarding Quick Time 10.4's failure to capture audio on screen recordings? I keep reading about a 'built-in microphone' but I don't have one, or at least it doesn't show on my computer if it's an option. System Preferences under 'Output' shows there are 'internal speakers', 'Line-out' and 'Digital Out' while 'Input' lists 'Line in' and 'Digital in'. That's it.

I tried Soundflower but it didn't help. I don't have external speakers and use headphones for all my audio listening.

Thanks

Joe

QuickTimePlayer only captures what's on the screen in screen recording, and never does the audio.

Many thanks and sorry for the delayed reply (looks like my notifications need attention as well). 'Microphone - None' from the link made me wonder why none of this was mentioned on the various help pages I'd read across the internet. Then I realised that almost all those seeking a solution were laptop users, (unsurprisingly since most people use laptops these days). QT does record audio on screen recordings where there's access to a built-in mic, or such was my clear impression from Apple forums and elsewhere, but that's neither here nor there now in view of Audit13's post.

Thanks for clearing the matter up. Much appreciated.

Soundflower works for me.

With Soundflower installed, I choose "Soundflower (2ch)" as my sound output (in System Preferences or just using the menubar icon), open Quicktime Player, select File>New Screen Recording, click the down arrow next to the record button, select "Soundflower (2ch)" and proceed with the recording.

With this procedure you will NOT hear what's being recorded. You will hear it when you've changed your sound output back to what it normally is and play back the recording.

If you want to hear the output while you're recording create a new "Multi-Output Device" in the Audio MIDI Setup app and check both "Soundflower (2ch)" and your regular sound output device. Choose that new device as your sound output but for the recording in Quicktime Player you'd just select "Soundflower (2ch)".

Thanks for this. I know others continue to update Soundflower:

I've never had any joy with Soundflower myself. I came across iShowU Audio Capture eventually (I use it with Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) for screen recording since OBS is free). Supposedly iShowU was developed as a replacement for Soundflower once the originator of the software stopped maintaining it. Here's a link and installation vid:

UPDATE: iShowU definitely works with Quick Time 10.4 I can report, which is enough for needs. I've all ready dispensed with OBS.
