No Contract iPhone unlockable?

Hi,

My brother in China asked me to purchase an iphone for him. Before I go ahead and purchase it, can someone please confirm that the iphone I will be buying for him can be unlocked.

PS. Eagerly waiting for skype app release.
 
You probably won't know until it's in your hands. If it comes with 2.2.1, then no, it's not software unlockable. If it comes with an older firmware, then yes it will be. I'm guessing AT&T's stock is probably older, so you'd have a better chance of getting an unlockable one there. Apple probably has newer stock and might come with 2.2.1.
