System suddenly a few days ago will not allow any "save as" to desktop.
When Desktop selected in "where" window
the window returns to wherever it was before making Desktop selection.
    Desktop selection not allowed.

Each time I've had to resolve saving issues occur on a path that was previously available to save, it turned out to be a general permissions issue.

Go to Utilities, Disk Utility, Select Macintosh HD(or the name of your startup volume, typically the first indented listing in the left column), and Click Repair Disk Permissions, after process completes, restart your Mac.

It'll does sound permissions-related, but repairing permissions via eg Disk Utility won't sort it out - that only deals with system files, and your desktop is stored in your user folder.

If you Get Info on your home folder (highlight it in Finder and hit Cmd + I), down the bottom is a Sharing & Permissions section. You need to make sure your account is listed there - it should specifically say "(Me)" after it - and that the privilege level next to it is Read & Write. The other users / groups listed don't matter so much, but should be set to Read Only.

Assuming that all checks out, there's a button at the very bottom of the panel that looks like a cog, which should have an option to "Apply to enclosed items". That takes a while to complete (a few minutes, usually less than a dozen), but odds are you'll be sorted afterwards. Maybe reboot a couple of times to be sure.

You may need to click the little padlock in the lower-right and enter your password before you can make changes.

    Tried them all

    Thanks for the hints, all.
    Repaired the permissions and restarted.
Fixed the items under Get Info.
Still no save to desktop permitted.
All else having failed, I guess I'll have to go
to my local Apple store and see what the
    Experts have to say.

What happens if you select your home folder as the save location, then select your Desktop folder from within said home folder?

I just hold down the 'option' key to get a "Save-As" box.

    No Desktop save

No problem getting save as box, with or without option key.
Save as "where" box changes back to whatever it was before I select
Desktop. Absolutely will not stay at Desktop.
