What's the point of this thread? The new 13 and 15 inch MBP both have disc drives. The new 15 inch retina model does not. Get the one that suits your needs.

Many want both.

As a general question - Does anyone ever find something they would want to load into their computer? A cheap for example, I know that happens with me.

Ability to toss in a dvd movie? (I like to be able to do that)

Games? (If cheap enough Steam does fine)

Software? Personally I would love for all software to be digital, I would still have Windows 7, some boot discs, couple other things that never worked correct as a USB flash drive.

I noticed something else, a cheap sub two hundred dollar netbook without an optical drive is not a big deal, yet when spending two thousand plus it becomes a big deal, personal value issues I believe.

I moved all the movie watching to a blu-ray player overall, easier, the computer can be just that.

Curious how so many people either do not currently have any optical media, or never use it. How did it switch over like that? I am heavily into movies so that could be one reason I notice it a lot more plus I like to get things cheap, meaning I will seek out music, movies and games on disc because it is often cheaper.

No great love for real media, just quality and content.

glad you said that. I was not able to find any data on the drives on the MBP line or if they have them at all.

Exactly. Its real easy for people to just say streaming and cloud storage is the way to go. Really? What if I am on the road and have no access to a wifi connection but want to watch a movie in the car on my laptop? Sure, I could use the hotspot on my phone and rip thru my data plan quicker than all hell, not a good option. DVD option is much better. I thought Apple would finally step up and start offering Blu Ray drives as every other laptop maker has but instead they remove the optical drive altogether? Just not smart for many reasons already mentioned by myself and others.

Yes, it is not about fear of the forced future, only that it would not work for my personal needs or wants. Without 3G I would hardly have an internet connection on the go. I was sure Apple was going to go this way, I thought they should had gotten blu-ray drives years ago and now they do this. Just further away from a model I could buy into. There is likely to be a Windows system with super high resolution now that Apple has done it. HP Envy's always looked nice. We are taking issue because we want to like it, each year they do some good things as well as remove others that are just too useful, they need to have options.

Agreed. My family and I go camping and in the past we have used our MacBook to watch movies at night. Having a SuperDrive on the computer is a great feature to have...it makes the computer a mobile entertainment system. That is why I bought a 2012 MBP 13"...I care less about Retina but still want a disc drive without having to bring along a peripheral.

Sorry Apple, you really dropped the ball here. Working professionals such as myself who do photo and video work are being screwed and will be forced to start buying Windows laptops. There are a large number of professionals who need a disc drive on their laptops to burn discs for clients when traveling. The MBA already forego a disc drive to be thinner and lighter, why do they feel the need to do this with the MBP as well? The PRO should be more suited for business and include a disc drive. Let the people who want the thin and light laptops for play get the Air. Stupid move Apple, very stupid.

Your argument is confusing to me since the old shape MBP still have an ODD.

For those that want to watch movies on the go, it makes far more sense to rip them to your hard drive and compress them. Then you can carry a lot of DVDs with you.

Then carry an external DVD drive. You can't claim to want to watch DVDs on the road, and then claim that carrying an external drive is too much hassle. Obviously, you're already carrying DVDs.

Or, just plan in advance and load some digital movies onto your computer before you leave home.

Seriously, the weight, size, and battery-life advantages of dropping the ODD more than make up for the downsides. Quit whining about something everyone knew was coming for the past year.

i am a casual laptop user and currently have a pc. i am looking forward to buying my first mac. i heard the new updates were coming out and thought the retina display sounded cool. i was confused though to why they got rid of the cd/dvd drive in the new macbook pro retina. i thought the main difference between the airs and pros was that the pro had the cd/dvd and the air was thinner without it. seems like the new macbook pro retina is more like a macbook air and they should have just changed the display to retina on all models so people could chose if they wanted the dvd/cd drive or thinner notebook but have the retina display. i need the cd/dvd drive so i guess i will just go with the regular macbook pro. seems silly to me to buy an external cd/dvd drive when it can just be built in. its going to probably weight the same to carry them together or separately anyways. i have a lot of cd's and dvd's that i already own so i want to be able to transfer music to itunes and watch movies without having to download anything new. i think everyone is not as tech savvy as those on here and alot of people i talked to were confused about there not being a cd/dvd drive.

I guess the fact that it's now at 2-3 weeks before they'll ship a ODD-less MBP, while the models with them are shipping immediately proves what a boneheaded move it was for Apple to remove something everyone needs. :D

I expect this to be the fastest-selling Mac in history.

Don't buy a retina MBP?

what's wrong with the usb superdrive?
I guess you haven't read the less than stellar reviews of its reliability and performance on the Apple store? 3 stars and lots of complaints.

Works for me. I will reconsider if and when they add a hi res 3360x2100 (1680x1050 equivalent) option, but otherwise, no sale. Too many drawbacks for the limited benefits right now, especially at that price.
