I've used facetime on my computer exactly 2 times. For me, its not a deal killer. I suspect the low end specs in the camera are there to conserve the battery.

The new MacBook is very pretty, but everything I learn about it shows that it's extremely compromised in functionality to the point of making it nearly useless. I am NOT liking the direction of the new Johnny Ive era.

I've literally never used the FaceTime camera on my rMBP.

Also why care? You aren't seeing it, just hope the person you're calling has a 720p one.

Wow, well that might just be the straw that broke the camels back for me.

I was ready to deal with a single port, the performance drop from my 2012 rMBP and the reduced screen resolution to get the form factor that I have always wanted (Basically a tiny machine that is just the width of the keyboard.)

But with a 480P camera on a $1300 laptop...ugh. I work remotely so I use the camera on my computer daily.

Looks like i'll have to stick to the rMBP line until revision 2 or 3.

It will be easy for them to pitch FaceTime HD as an upgrade in the next model.

This. Hopefully they will also include Touch ID in the trackpad, as I had hoped for on this model. When they began to talk about that trackpad yesterday, I thought for sure that they were going to say that it has Touch ID infused in it...

The next (2017?) model will be even better, if it has:
- 2 USB-C ports
- Micro SD Card slot
- Touch ID trackpad
- 720p or better FaceTime camera

and apple has one for you. so what's the problem?

and for all the whining...dare, just for a second, to imagine that there is actually some reason apple went with a 480p camera on the new mb. possible? or is it more likely they didn't go with an HD camera just to piss people off?

apple has numerous models now, with lots of options. go for the one that best suits your needs...simple.

Lol these responses make me laugh all the time. Apple does this for only one reason and one reason only: to maximize margin profits.

They don't give you a 720p or higher not because they can't. It's because they have learned in order to make earnings for next quarter they need to keep selling. And if they threw in all the latest and greatest why would anyone buy another MacBook v2??

They keep it bare minimum so next few iterations there is something u can deem worth it to upgrade. Cash cow plan baby. Nothing wrong with this but you will be the chump if you ever buy any apple v1 product. Wait for at least v2 or even v3.

Just look at the iPad mini 3. Lol. Apple tax at its best. This new MacBook is basically the iPad pro with keyboard. Except no touch screen and cannot detach from keyboard. That Microsoft sp4 can't come soon enough!

Id prefer to see the return of the power switch as a "Touch ID" pad.

.. OR just put Retina on an Air.

Despite the gossipy rumors about the Air getting fat, its still miraculously thin and light considering how much it packs inside:

- MagSafe
- 2x USB3
- SD Card
- 720p Camera
- Great keyboard
- Intel i7
- Very reasonably priced (in comparison)

The ONLY thing its missing is Retina. and with the introduction of the new MacBook then that omission seems to be more intentional than impossible.

i'm sure you believe what you're saying, but that doesn't make it fact. and lots of people will buy this mac, and, some time later, buy the next iteration. and they'll enjoy using what they have, when they have it. that's how we work with our devices... :D

while they probably put that camera in there just to piss you off specifically... it is what it is. am sure there's a reason for it.

meanwhile, you can get a different mac model that has the HD you need. there are always choices, and apple has more of them than it's had in a long time...

What kind of response is that? Blah blah blah it's just not the computer for you, blah blah blah you can find another computer, etc.

Or perhaps you can just admit that this Macbook has some serious flaws...

They will sell many new MacBooks even the gold option. Apple products have the allure factor. It's really tempting when you see it in person. This goes for all Apple products.

I'm not bashing apple I'm just saying if you were smart you would see this MacBook as a v1 product to test the water. I just my air 2 for everything I could do on that new MacBook. So it's basically another cash cow for Apple. It's priced the same as a 13" R MacBook Pro and man that 13" is way better. Sure it's not 2lbs but come on, it's definitely not heavy by any standards. Plus u now get 10hrs battery life and faster ram and double the speed ssd.

The only time I've opened FaceTime on my Macbook Air was when I accidentally clicked it, then the app opened and it had me at the most awful angle ever.

I definitely see a use for FaceTime on my iMac, because it's a computer I'd be doing work and using in a business day-to-day type environment, but the Macbook 2015 is not designed to be a workhorse.... it's meant to be a basic computer with ultra portability.

My guess is up in the lid there's not enough depth where the camera is for a HD camera, or it just wasn't important when factoring in weight\battery life\size, etc.... everything Apple does is carefully thought out. This laptop is going to be a huge hit, and everyone knows it.

They likely aren't going to miss the 0.01% of buyers like you who won't buy it because they sacrificed HD camera and squeezed out an extra 20 cents in profit. But then again, after all your whining, I bet you'll be lined up when the store opens on the launch day to buy it, LOL

all this whining! apple has more macbooks in it's lineup than it's had in a while. so find one that works best for you, and get on with it. or...wait for what's next.

everything starts with a 'first-generation' version. for many, this will be fine, a light, well-designed macbook; for others, version 2 and thereafter will be worth waiting for.

in the meantime, there ARE options...

Or perhaps you can just admit that this Macbook has some serious flaws...

I'm not sure most would consider that a flaw, let alone a serious flaw. I'd bet that 95% of the market who buys this laptop don't even know the difference between the two cameras.

Most people who buy this are people like my mom. She opens the FaceTime application and dials... she's delighted to see someone's face from across the world. SD vs HD... really? Common, she's surprised it even works at all.

You have to realize that you're not buying a high end computer.... in fact, it's rather entry-level when you look at today's specs on laptops. In every way this product is inferior to the Macbook Pro EXCEPT in size. The primary reason anyone should be buying it is for it's size, and with a tiny form factor comes compromise.

If you don't like it, there are plenty of models with HD cameras on them. I personally don't care, and it doesn't influence my decision to buy it in any way. I suppose if I worked for a company which didn't use a legitimate video conferencing and it was some rinky-dink business that used free FaceTime calls for communications, I'd be mad I couldn't see my co-workers zits and poorly shaven faces in HD... but the reality is it's a 12" screen, and it's meant for quick casual calls. If you get depressed by that, carry around the boat anchor (macbook pro)... since the new Macbook "has so many serious flaws"

I agree 100%, well said. There's no need to whine. If Apple was REPLACING the Macbook pro AND the Macbook air with this, yeah people could legitimately whine, but there's no excuse. this is an additional product, something new for those who want a consumer-grade, everyday ultra-portable laptop. It's not for someone who sits on their laptop 10 hours a day... it's not for someone who needs heavy processing power ... the problem is so many people on here whine because the product doesn't fit THEIR needs and they ignore Apple's target demographic. You do realize that only 8% of the users of Apple products use their computers for BUSINESS anyhow, right?

So this is designed for the 92% who use it for education or play. If that's not you, don't buy it. You can't have ultra-thin and light without compromises.

In all fairness, FaceTime and Skype don't seem to use 720p anyways.

It's not ideal but I suspect it had more to do with making the camera super thin with its lens than trying to be cheap (like the 1GB of RAM in the iPhone, for example).

That and the Core M would probably go up in flames when having to process more than 480p.

I need an 11" machine with a decent keyboard, a retina screen and an HD FaceTime camera.

and apple has one for you. so what's the problem?
Isn't the problem that Apple DOESNT have an Air with Retina Screen?

Wait...so you're allowed to make up fictional EXCUSES for why a feature was omitted. But other consumers aren't allowed to state FACTS about Products that don't exist?

MacBook Air with Retina Screen doesn't exist... Not Simple.

(Modern Family just had that wonderful episode showcasing the benefits of Apple's ecosystem with FaceTime being the center of the entire thing. It's something that is desirable to consumers so why try so hard to shut down consumer opinions?)

I understand the complaints., but there are several choices to be had. The MacBook Air is a good buy.

*spazzes out* Not a high end model you say?!?!?!?!? What are you--- ugh.
This is a $1300 (or $1500 in my country) laptop. There is a noticeable difference between the two, and I notice it coming from someone with a 360p webcam if I'm not mistaken. (My old laptop doesn't get used anymore)

I hate the argument, if you don't like this, then it's not for you.
That doesn't stop me from having the opinion that this thing is a piece of crap?

Actually no, the screen renders it crap. It would make more sense to put a 1440x900 screen in the Macbook and Retina in the Air. Power users tend to spend more time on their laptops in my experience, and rely on a non blotchy well saturated screen.

See that's the problem. What you're saying is like walking into a Porsche dealership and telling the salesman "This car is a piece of garbage because the cup holder doesn't fit my favorite brand of soda, I'll offer you half because that lacking item clearly makes it overpriced" ....

Just because it doesn't fit your needs doesn't mean it's not for everyone. I hate YOUR argument. How about you price out a loaded Sony Vaio and see what it'll set you back. You're buying ultra-compact, not a top end, high-spec'd system.

if every individual had a macbook to suit their specific needs, we'd have millions of models to choose from. but life doesn't work like that. so you find what's best for you in the real world, and get on with it.

It may be 480p to conserve battery life and limit the amount of CPU power FaceTime and photo booth consume.

For goodness sake. Even a low end 2010-era mobile SoC could handle 720p in hardware with little to no CPU or battery hit. The latest Intel mobile processors wouldn't even break a sweat with HD video.
