I go to a pretty prestigious art school, but I'm no artist. I got in for technical skills. So, I often feel a bit overwhelmed by the quality of the art I see from people in my art classes. I often need more inspiration and more work to create things of lesser merit.
My teachers encourage us to look at the central concepts of design and they urge us to apply those concepts to our compositions. Things like rhythm, hierarchy, symmetry, repetition, axis, etc.
I prefer to take a less sophistocated approach and look at the things that inspire me, which tends to be music, and recreate those things visually.
I have a challenge for you. Listen to the song 'Amphibian' by Bjork, and try to recreate the song visually. The song is rare, might even be hard to find from a p2p program. But it will definitely get the creative juices flowing in your brain, and I bet you will be surprised at what you come up with.
Try to visually create your current emotional state, might be a good alternative. That might be where the artistic block is coming from.
