I am sure is a security venerability is discovered in 4.2 they will patch it.

Actually once they stop support they're pretty much done putting out updates for that device, even security holes.
When the jailbreakme.com exploit came out they updated and patched the exploit with 4.0.2 on all iphones but the iphone 2G that was left behind on 3.1.3
Cant blame them though.

Did Apple say they were stopping support of the 3G? I am sure is a security venerability is discovered in 4.2 they will patch it. Why should anyone get a break, did AT&T trick anyone or lie to get people to sign that contract?

While Apple didn't expressly say the iPhone 3G is EOL, it is. The only iDevice to get a firmware update that came out after the next big release was the iPod Touch 1G, it got 1.1.5. And it only got that because people didn't want to pay the upgrade fee. The iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 2G, and iPod Touch 8Gb 3G will never receive another firmware update.

The 3G can't handle iOS as Smooth as an iPhone 3GS, i pretty much gave up with Apple Updates after they said they are not multitasking on the 3G

You could always go buy an Android phone, then hope, pray, and WAIT for even one SINGLE update to the OS. Then you could say you weren't being screwed over....wait..

Looks like Apple might be taking care of its customers after all. iPhone 3G started out on iOS 2.0 by the way.

No, it started on some OS earlier than that (whatever was the previous iOS because the first update I got for my 3G was 2.0). I remember cause I got it relatively early (not first day, I had no clue it was brand new when I got it though, just a week to a few weeks after it came out). The thing crashed on safari all the time. If I hadn't already really started getting addicted to it just for being able to get on the net on my phone I'd have already been frustrated with the phone already (It was reliably unreliable. It would crash on Safari sometimes when it wasn't even loading a page, just displaying it!). Or rather I really wanted to like it so I tried to overlook it mostly.

I remember 2.0 was the first update I got cause it made Safari stable (I have no clue how people liked their phone before 2.0, Safari was a POS!). That's when I really started to love the phone.

Section 1, Paragraph 2 reads

"Apple will provide you any iPhone OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPhone OS software release following the version of iPhone OS software that originally shipped from Apple on your iPhone, for free. For example, if your iPhone originally shipped with iPhone 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPhone OS software updates it might release up to and including the iPhone 4.x software release. "

They have already fulfilled their obligation since the 3G shipped with 2.x or earlier.

Also, Apple has publicly stated that they expect to support each iPhone model for about two-three years.

There are certain acceleration functions built into the 3GS and 4's CPU. It's possible that Apple may be using those now.

Time to upgrade if you want the new features
But the bright side is, your phone didn't stop working all of a sudden

No, actually it's just time to jailbreak if you haven't done it yet. All those "new" features can either be activated with the proper jailbreak or you can get apps providing those features from Cydia.

Apple is just once again artificially making an older product obsolete. And I don't see myself spending another 500+ Euros on hardware just to get a restricted new version of iOS.

That's beautiful, because I purchased a NEW iPhone 3G only LAST year. So where are my two to three years of support? You know, it doesn't matter when Apple started producing a product, the timer only starts when a product is being sold to a customer.

But in all honesty, in this case I don't care that much. iOS 4.3 doesn't bring anything that I don't already have or couldn't get from the jailbreak community.

Apparently, there will be no further releases of the operating system for iPhone 3G. The iOS 4.3 page on apple.com states that it is only compatible with iPhone4 and iPhone 3GS.

That's ridiculous!

Aww. Time to upgrade. You honestly expect ANY manufacturer to support a phone with updates beyond a couple of years?

Here come the whiny threads about how 3G doesn't get any updates! Blah blah blah.

What's the point of pushing 4.3 to a 3G if it's going to make it grind to a halt? Old computers can't run today's software either. The software companies owe you nothing, I'm afraid.

Who's fault is it you bought an old and already outdated device last year instead or getting a 3GS like most people?

+1

Not one company provides software updates like Apple. I had a Nokia S40. When S60 came out, I couldn't update the software-I had to buy a NEW HARDWARE. Apple provides at least two major updates- meaning you can use your phone with new features for 3 years. Samsung, SonyEricson, Android devices, Motorola- none can match that.

I had to run the same software on my RAZR for 4 years.
