No ISP browsing&email on free wifi

Moving to an iPad (completely mobile usage).

Forgive my ignorance but without a telephone connection and wifi only how do I browse and email on the road.

On the assumption that there are plenty of free wifi connections out there (UK only) and to keep my costs down can I do this without a designated ISP??

Yes of course. Just go into a coffee shop or whatever for their free WiFi.

However, is your email provided by an ISP, or do you have something like Gmail that is independent of an ISP?

P.S. Having never been to the UK, I wrote "tea shop" but then realized that people in the UK don't actually go to tea shops to drink tea. They're all coffee shops, ironically enough, despite the UK's famous love of tea.

It's drunk in all kinds of places, inter alia, cafes, burger joints, restaurants, bakeries and the occasional tea shop.

If you have a data plan with your cell phone and a capable cell phone, you can use the phone as a mobile hotspot and connect your iPad to the phone via WiFi. Down side to this if you use it a lot is phone battery drain and if you have a limited data plan you are using the plan data. Works great for occasional usage.

This is what I do. I have a 13 GB data plan as well as 5 hours of unlimited data usage per month so it works well for me. But yes, the battery drain on the phone is significant.

There are thousands of McDonalds out there with free WiFi.

I would never use free WiFi, unless I had access to my VPN.

Never ever connect to free, unknown Wifi without using a properly secured VPN. Otherwise, you are putting yourself at risk for bad things happening to your private information.

Free WiFi with no passwords = no encryption. Whatever you send out can be intercepted, or somebody can easily pretend to be a generic free WiFi and perform man in the middle attack and get all your info or return you with malicious webpages. Never connect to WiFi with no password requirement. Even for those which require passwords, it may use WEP or WPA1 which have already been cracked.

The only things I would recommend are: 1) get an LTE version iPad. There are many multiSIM plans which are not prohibitively expensive. 2) Use personal hotspot from your phone.

I am UK resident (no LTE) and amp looking to reduce my internet costs to as close to zero as possible. Personal reasons dictate that I plan this for my possible near future.

So no telephone line=no home based usage etc..

I can use any number of free, password protected wifi locally. Anyone capable of tracking my info from my iPad would have to be damned good/bad but would eventually realise that there is NO info personal/private or financial on my iPad.
Everything like that is on my phone and that is kept off permanently outside my house (Only used for banking/doctor/utilities etc - as have no family)

Actually email acts pretty much just as a notifier for me - you know - payments due, macrumours postings and stuff. Your lives are a lot more complex than mine and you probably have a lot more to protect.

Anyway, just need to know how I go about this so I am ready for the changes ahead. Using a mobile company would be financially prohibitive requiring a phone plan for calls and a data plan for the iPad. so if I can just use the web free for a few odds and sods that are needed without paying out it would be good.
