I'm still getting the banner but no sound. Mail is the only applications I'm having problem with. All other applications work perfectly. The machine is the new MacBook Pro 16" with Apple silicon. I'm also noticing the 'play sound for notifications' option is missing in Mail. Is this new or the setup is corrupted in my machine.

Try the following:

1) Close Mail
2) Open the Terminal in Applications/Utilities
3) Type the following to reset the NewMessages Sound option:

Code:
defaults delete -app Mail NewMessagesSoundName

4) Open Mail and select your desired sound

Hopefully it will work now.

If you're referring to the Mail option under Notifications, I think 'play sound for notifications' was removed back in Big Sur.
