i just want a new one. no more core 2 duo

if it comes out with the amd processor, i wouldnt say no

Being a computer science major graduate student, I feel that it is not an easy choice to make.

After eagerly waiting for this year's iteration, I was very optimistic that Apple would work out a way to squeeze in the i-core chips for 13" MBP. I have read the articles that explain their reason for not making the move, that being, the physical limitation of space on the small motherboard. However, Intel did design the Small Form Factor (SFF) Core 2 Duo chips for MBA to address a similar situation. They may do something similar with MBP 13".

Having said that, new things will keep on evolving and there will always be something better coming up. I think I would just go with it and buy the 13" as the pleasure of using the machine will easily outweigh the pain of waiting for the next iteration whose timeline is not certain. It may be this October, or December, or even April next year...

Also, I feel, the base model of 13" will only be "marginally" better than the base model of its next iteration. (e.g. new base model iMacs with i3... link: http://www.macworld.com/reviews/product/586734/review/215inch_core_i3_imac306ghz.html. If we ignore the discrete graphics card and only consider the cpu performance, it is not a major performance bump.)

There are 13" notebooks with i3s and battery lives of around.. 8+ hours, considering the macbook has a comparatively huge battery for it's size, they could quite happily squeeze out 10+

I have to wonder what GPU they'll stick in an i3 model however, will they stay with nVidia, or go for an ATI

I bought a C2D model in June, I would like an I3 or I5, but am not fussed.

I have 8GB RAM and a 1TB HDD, so my needs are met.

An I3/5 model would be nice, and I am probably going to buy one, but not for a couple of years now, I am happy with my MBP and have no need for anything faster at this time.

It's going to be a LONG TIME until the i13 cores are released

haha thats exactly what i was thinking. anyway my computer has a p4 and it runs leopard great so i dont really see what the big deal is with this whole i3 v. c2d debate. the c2d isnt really that slow and especially compared to what else is on the market. do you know they still put celerons in the low(er) end compacs?

i3

I've used Core i3 machines and I can tell you they are not super fast.

My MBP 13 is quite peppy and if someday I really need a speedup then I will buy an SSD.

problem is your buying it today not last year. i5/i7 will still be still a good chip next year and the year after that. what will the c2d look like in 2 years. i am sure most people keep their machines 2-3 years.

The i3 is just a name. It isn't all that much faster than the current C2Ds. So even if they'd put in a i3, in two years it'll still be pretty much the same as the current C2Ds. It's purely psychological. People want the newest things, because they'll last longer. But that's just not always the case. By the time the current C2Ds really start to become too slow, the i3s will be too slow as well.

In the end it really depends on what you do with them of course. When using really CPU intensive apps you'll definitely notice the difference between the C2D and the i5/i7 (not the i3!), but for most people buying the 13" (Apple's main target group) the current C2Ds are all fast enough. With most stuff they do the C2D is sleeping half the time. It's memory and often the hard drive that are the bottlenecks in daily use. Including an i3 will not change this in any way.

your right

id like to see the i5 in the 13.

Oh yeah, me too :) That would make a big difference. But I'm not sure they're there yet with the Intel/GPU/heat production problems.

Indeed.

that is a big problem for apple they can't properly update the 13 macbook pro or macbook air until the graphics issue is solved. the 13 is the most popular size but if you read on here it seems alot of people are picking up 15s.

Yes, many people want the 13" size but insist on an i5/i7 machine so they're sacrificing by accepting a heavier, bulkier notebook with a larger footprint.

That's unfortunate. Many people chase spec's, but I'd bet 80% don't need nor will ever use the added power, future proofing>doesn't exist in electronics.

So in some cases it's under false pretenses they're going for the larger screen, (imo).

SSDs should be cheaper. A 13" base model with a proper SSD will blow you away.
