I really need some help on this one. My iPhone SE OS15.2.1 has stopped giving me message notifications. My message notifications are turned on - default - ping! My sound is turned on. My Do Not Disturb is OFF (when someone calls me, my phone rings!) Share Across Devices is OFF. Focus is disabled. I've tryed doing a restart. No help.

Now, when I look at a message I didn't get a notification for, there is text under it that says "Doug has notifications silenced". But I don't.

What's really weird is that when someone messages me, they get a "Message delivered" report, and even a "Message read" report, which is nuts, because I was never even informed that I got a message. How was I supposed to read it if I didn't know about it!

I'm bamboozled.

Any chance you have another device linked to your apple account that is receiving text messages? You should get the notification and sound, but the sounds have been somewhat buggy for awhile now. I would also check to see if you have any devices linked that you don't recognize. You can do this either by going into the icloud settings on your phone, or by going to the appleID login page.

Additionally, even though it sounds like imessage, I would also check your cell plan to ensure that no weird devices are setup there either. It is rare but there has been cases where someone unauthorized takes control of a cell plan, by either knowing the information and PIN, or by the Sim-Swap scam.

My sound is not buggy. When I select it, it makes the right noise, and loud. As I said, my Share Across Devices is off. But I have two computers that are listed in My Devices on iCloud. How can I tell if either of these are responsible for killing notifications on my phone?

Update.

Now this is interesting. I now get message notifcations. What changed? Well, when I was having trouble, I was trying to send myself a message using the Mac Message app. When I did that, I didn't get notified. So I asked my wife to message me from her iPhone. I didn't get notified. BUT I STILL HAD THE MAC MESSAGE APP RUNNING! Now that my Mac Message app is off, everything works. Am I to understand that my Mac message app is somehow blocking notifications on my iPhone??? How do I tell it not to do that? Also, if Share Across Devices on my iPhone is off, how is it that another device can turn off its notifications?

I am sorry Doug, I don't have a Mac. I would think it would be a sharing system but isince you mentioned that the share across devices is disabled, maybe the Mac took over? I would actually try enabling the sharing across devices to see if that improves. Like I mentioned though, there are bugs that occasionally affect notification sounds, you might get a text and not know it. However, you should still see the screen notification.

I guess the question is, if Sharing Across Devices is disabled on my phone does that mean that my phone can't kill notifications on another device, or that other devices can't kill notifications on my phone? I'm inclined to believe it's the former.

I would think it would limit to the phone only but with the various weird bugs in iOS 15, who knows, haha

Some apps on my phone stopped receiving notifications after upgrading to ios 15. I had to remove them and then reinstall to fix the problem.

But this is probably not possible with the messages app.

OK, this is resolved. For some reason, when the Messages app was running on my Mac, my iPhone refused to execute notification when other people texted me. That has stopped. Now, when the Messages app is running, I properly get notified when other people text me. When I first saw the problem, I made a few changes, but the problem was not fixed. Eventually it was. I have to assume that changes to some iPhone setting may take a while to get "absorbed" by the system. That being the case, it remains a fact that if I text MYSELF, the text is delivered, but no notification happens. I guess the system figures that, hey, if he's texting himself, he doesn't need to be notified of it! That's a little dumb. So if you want to test message notifications, don't text yourself from another device that you're signed in on!
