Yeah, the only car chase I have ever seen on the news is the OJ Simpson one, which was ridiculous anyway since they were obviously chasing an innocent man around the city.

My first laugh of the day. :D Good one.

wait til they can get an electro magnetic pulse (EMP) beam narrow enough to hit only a single vehicle. That will be the ultiimate solution. Fry the cars electronics and the vehicle will be disabled immediately. :D
I wouldn't be surprised if cars in the future were required to include remote controllable electronics, so that the cops could just stop it with the click of a button.

I wouldn't be surprised if the system got hacked soon after its introduction either.

I don't think they'd be able to anchor it down to the ground securely enough to stop a car. Yes, they do it on aircraft carriers but there is a LOT of metal holding those down.

DOH... a very relevant detail that i totally neglected in my chuckling about spiderman. blimey!

i am going to play my "blonde card" here

That's precisely why they probably won't do it...software is just too vulnerable.

It would be nice if they could though - it would stop a lot of dangerous chases before they start.

...i think it would be less devistating than a spike strip which can cause a serious accident <shrugs> maybe it's extremely expensive, i don't know, but i know it exists.

Spike strips are not just like nails that "blow" the tire. The spikes are hollow and stick in the tire tread. They are supposed to deflate the tire gradually so that the driver doesn't lose control.

A more radical idea to prevent crimes such as these might be to build enough prisons and make criminals actually serve their entire sentences. But, of course, that would never happen!

This IS currently being developed in various incarnations. I'm not sure if it is in use anywhere yet.

That wouldn't help prevent chases started by firdst time offenders, or repeats who have already served their entire sentence.

Why not raise gas prices so high that nobody can afford more than a mile's worth at a time? The the suspects could be rounded up when they run out.

If that's the price of being free from dasdardly car-criminals, I'm sure all good citizens would be more than willing to go along with it.
