I had wondered what they would do with the lightning port in the current case... this is a bummer if it's the case though! (Pun totally intended )

Only so much room in the box.. so like the headphone jack they had to do something.. eventually they'll eliminate the cables, power brick.. maybe even eliminate the phone.. why? Courage people.. Courage!

But being serious, they needed to change the packaging because they added the 3.5mm adapter and changed the headphones to lightning. More then likely if purchasing the headphones separately in stores, it will be in some sort of plastic casing.
