If the rumors are true about the 7 inch Ipad, I have a feeling that Apple will not release a new ipod touch. They haven't released a new one in two years and with a 7 inch ipad, they might not to release a new ipod touch. Especially if the 7 inch ipad will be around $199 - $249. That is roughly the same price as the ipod touch.

Except that there will always be a need for something pocket sized for those whom want a media player (that isn't a phone).

The Touch is still apples best selling iPod...

Over the past few months I have wondered if the 7" might be a replacement for the iPod Touch. Long term I think it could be discontinued, but in the short term I don't think it would make sense. Apple still sell the iPod Classic, so why drop the iPod Touch? I think the more likely scenario is that they will make at least one more significant update to the touch increasing its capacity to 128, and giving it more power. At the same time they will discontinue the Classic. Over the next few years the newer version of the touch will slowly be cannibalized by the iPhone and the 7" iPad, and will eventually be discontinued or replaced by another device such as an iPhone Lite.

The real problem with this idea is that, 7" iPad is not going to fit into my pocket.

The 7" iPad will not fit on my arm for running.

I think the iPod will be updated, it may have fewer updates, but it needs one more really good one.

5mp camera,
128GB disc,
updated processor,
and a flash for camera

IT really needs to be an iPhone 4s without 4 or GPS. Though GPS would be nice.

No.

7 inch iPads will not start fitting into pockets, and besides, the iPod touch is Apple's best selling and profitable iPod.

Even if the rumors about a smaller iPad are true I believe we'll see an updated iPod touch before the end of the year.

So what MP3 player should people buy?
Conditions: It can't cost £500 for 64gb. It can't come with a contract/monthly fee.

If you think Apple are going to drop the iPod Touch you're a massive fool.
