On iOS you have to use the Video app. It works fine if your iTunes library is small. However for reasons never clear it works horribly with large libraries (unlike the Apple TV apps). So if you have more than 1000 videos (not uncommon if you've ripped all your DVDs and BluRays) it'll time out before getting all the file names. I've reported this bug to Apple numerous times but they've yet to fix it.
For the AppleTV though it works wonderfully and I find it superior to alternatives like Plex. (Although others disagree) I have a very large library in iTunes since I prefer to rip BluRays rather than buy off the iTunes store.
Forget trying to view your home sharing library on an iOS device via the TV app. It sucks, sucks, sucks. Instead I use Air Video Server HD on my Mac and the Air Video HD app on my iOS device. It is far superior. On the AppleTV I still use the Computers app to stream my library.
I have read through all of these posts and I still can not figure out how to get the TV app to recognize family sharing. I am trying to make it possible to have my kids stream movies from their iPads (without having to download them to their iPads). What I have found is that it must be done through the TV app. When I download the TV app, I do not see any movies except the one that is actually downloaded to their iPad. How do I get all of the itunes movies that we have purchased (through family sharing) to show up in the app so that they can stream them when we are in wifi?Had me confused for a while, but as previously mentioned you need to add at least one movie or tv episode using usb to the device for it to start to look at your home sharing..
I am in the US.Which country are you in?
In the US you shouldn’t have to download the TV app. It’s one of the stock apps. It replaced the Videos app.
Try this.
In the iPads settings under iTunes and App Store you should be signed in under the same Apple ID that purchased the movies.
In the ipads settings under TV — iTunes video — you should have home sharing set to the same Apple ID that purchased the movies.
If you’re trying to watch movies or TV shows purchased from the iTunes Store you should be good to go. When you open the TV app under Library you should see a TV section, a Movie section, and a Downloaded section.
That’s as long as you have a WiFi connection fast enough to stream video.
If you’re trying to stream videos from the iTunes library of another Mac in your house you need to have the source Mac turned on with iTunes already running and you need to have Home sharing enabled.
The iPad needs to be as above and both Mac and IPad have to be on the same WiFi network.
In this case you’ll see the name of your shared iTunes library on the iPad along with the TV/Movies/Downloaded sections.

How are you? Is there anyway to get my movies I view in the "computer app" home sharing into the "tv app" on Apple TV?
I have a lot of purchased movies as well as ripped and I wish they could all
Be in the same app

Wow I’m an idiot. Much appreciated!Zucco10, you must use the "Computers" app on ATV via home sharing to view your ripped titles. The iTunes Movies app will only show purchased content.

This was the key for me - thanks!Had me confused for a while, but as previously mentioned you need to add at least one movie or tv episode using usb to the device for it to start to look at your home sharing..
OK, thank everyone for the help. I really appreciate it. I have it nailed now, maybe it will help someone.
I had done everything including sync by cable to itunes. What I had to do is I had to sync ONE movie to the phone by cable. I never do that, I just watched them all through the videos app without putting any on the phone. Obviously you need to sync one to set up the link. No idea why. Just did it on the 6s plus, now to do the ipad.
