When the pre-orders went up the SB was listed with the link bracelet only. If Apple was having trouble with that model they could have simply put "Available Soon" under the description. Had I known the SB would be sold months later with the sport band I would have waited instead of getting the SS with Sport band.
I'm not so much saying they were having problems, just that they needed time to ramp up their production. They were producing them in lower quantities, so they only made it available in a combination that would garner fewer orders. Apple is a business, they're not going to post anything on their store that will cause consumers to delay their purchase. Especially when they likely didn't even know what "soon" meant at the time. They likely didn't want to commit to any kind of timeline when it could have taken 6 months to get their process down, or 16. The one time they tried it in the past, with the white iPhone 4, they were burned badly. Any other retailer would have done the same.

Ya know, it's their company and they can run it as they see fit.

Maybe they're feeling invincible and figure they can get away with things. Or maybe there were other reasons.

You have the choice to vote with your wallet which is the only thing that will really get their attention. If you don't like the ways they choose to market their products then choose to buy from their competition.

Instead of the phrase, "producing them in lower quantities," would it be better to say, "…getting acceptable quality at lower yield rates"?

Keeping in mind that I know NOTHING about Apple's supply chain details…. ;)

Since the Sport band costs less, it's more likely that people will pick up a sports later if they already have the link for example. I'm guessing of all the bands it's probably the one they sell more of for cost and comfort reasons.

What I'd prefer to see is a bandless watch. This way, it'd dramatically simplify inventory as well as offer us more customizable options.

Exactly! I bought SS with Milanese Loop on launch day. I bought a sports band after a few months and now have 5 sports bands! The ML is great when I want to look dressy but I find the Sports bands more comfortable. I would really like a Modern Buckle but it is just too much to pay!

I seriously doubt initially offering the Space Black only with the link bracelet then expanding it to include the Sport band is an example of their original plan not working as well as they hoped. More likely they wanted make the Space Black as exclusive as possible at first and force people to get the link bracelet if they wanted the Space Black badly enough as a means of upselling.

If Apple had stuck to this plan I wouldn't have been as upset but to turn around and offer it at the same price I paid for the SS a few months later makes me

If the BSB had only been available with the SB watch at the outset, I would have been a little annoyed. I wanted to have the option of changing to other bands later, and I didn't think (and still don't think) the SB case can "dress up" as nicely as the SS case. In lieu of getting the SS case on a brightly-colored Spirt band, I would have tried to spring for the SS on mesh, but my wife didn't want us to spend so much right away.

I've started feeling the opposite. I bought the stainless model with the link bracelet, thinking I can dress it up and down with various straps, but I've resorted to using the black rubber band all of the time, so I kinda wish I got the space black model in the first place. Lots of people wear luxury watches with rubber bands and suits, and lots of people even wear things like Fitbits with suits...and I rarely wear a suit, anyways. :) My entire wardrobe is essentially black, grey, white or denim, so I'll probably get the next version in Space Black.

Best Buy now only sells the Space Black SS with BSB. All other sport band watches are available to be shipped, but not in stores...at least in my area...
