No native SMS app on iPad-3G?

Just wondering why there is no native SMS app on the iPad...
even if we can receive SMS from the 3G operator,
I couldn't find any native way to use an equivalent
of the iPhone app... I only found 3rd party apps that
package SMS as a service, incl. a dedicated gateway...

Has anyone has any explanation? many thanks....

If you jailbreak you can hack it on, I believe, though I think there are some limitations.
