On iOS14, if I'm on a phone call and get a text message/iMessage - I no longer get any audible notification. Is this is a new setting or a bug? On iOS 13, I would get a sound notification.

I usually use a BT headset and have been missing text messages because my phone is in my pocket and I don't see the messages until I next look at my phone screen to see the alert.

Before ios14 with my ringer on when I was on a phone call it would notify me of an incoming text with the sound. Now there is no sound or vibration? I don’t like this. Is there a change somewhere to make to get it back? I have notifications on

I've tried everything I can think of - but nothing works. While I'm on a call if a message comes in, the display lights up - but it only shows the call screen. I don't receive any sounds or vibrations. Most of the time my phone is in my pocket as I'm using BT - so I never see anything.

Hoping this is a bug.

The same exact thing has happened to my iPhone 11. I asked Apple and they said check your side button. Thanks!
But these are the issues I have been experiencing from day 1:

1. When I'm on a phone call and receive an iMessage or text message I am not hearing the sound notification.

2. When I'm on a phone call and typing a message I cannot hear the keyboard clicks.

3. If I go send a picture, screenshot, website link, etc the people that I have conversations with aren't showing up. Instead, I have to click on messages and select the person in my contacts.

4. It happens more often than not but when I close out of the messages app and open up a message the keyboard or memojis don't show up right away. Also, when I close out and open messages back up the search doesn't appear until I move down the screen.

The part about there being nothing related to the notification on the screen was something that was there even in iOS 13 unfortunately. It sounds like now there might be an issue with notification sound/vibration on top of that, unless Apple decided that they want to treat notifications during calls differently so they aren't disturbing a call.

Correct - just noting what I'm seeing on iOS14. Sure hope this isn't Apple doing this intentionally, or at least if they want this have a setting. This makes long conference calls on my phone scary because I miss text messages during the call.

Yes...I have this issue as well....iphone X. seems like we could be missing messages while on a call...and I am. That could really be a problem with a critical message? This seems like a rather critical issue in need of a quick fix?

I’m quite surprised to see so many here are missing this, to me it was nothing but a huge annoyance.
It just goes to show that no two people are alike.
Short of this being a bug, it's possible that Apple re-evaluated this functionality and changed it based on that type of thinking as well.

If it's not a bug, then Apple needs this to be a setting.

The way it is now, they just forced me to constantly check my phone while on a phone call. I could be on an hour long conference call and miss 8 important texts unless every few minutes I wake up the screen and see.

Seems like they already had half of it working in this fashion in iOS 13 where you would get a sound/vibration for an incoming notification but wouldn't see a banner for it if you were on the call screen, and now it looks like they even got rid of the sound/vibration too. Definitely would be good to have a setting for it so that those who want can silence notifications during calls and others can still have them come in.

From reading the comments here, it sounds like it’s something that should be added as a setting somewhere.
To me a message when I’m on a call can just wait, they are never anything that’s life or death so replying after even a 2 hour call is no problem.

I guess part of the issue can be that Apple had it one way for a while and then changed it to a different (and basically the opposite) way almost randomly. While it seems that both ways can be of use to different people given that a different way was offered for some time before it would make sense then to have an option that provides controls for it if there's a desire to introduce another way of dealing with it all. Again, short of it all being a bug of some sort -- although even with that it seems like it would be better to have support for both methods where the user can select which one works better.

This was a great feature when I had a blackberry. I like that they took it away for iOS 14. I mean, I’m on a phone call and the one thing I need to do is concentrate on what the other person is saying on the call. If I get a loud notification in my ear the exact moment someone is trying to tell me some important piece of info, it used to infuriate me.
If I remember correctly blackberry just muted notifications and then let you know once your call ended.
Apple did wise up and let those of us with apple watches to get the notifications on our watch while we are on a phone call. To me this makes the most sense as long as you have an Apple Watch.

There are benefits for both approaches for different people. If this was done on purpose (and it's not some sort of a bug) after so many years of it working a different way then it seems that an option to let the user control it (where they can enable it back) would be appropriate.

So this just caused a huge PITA for me. Was on the phone, via BT headset on a work call - phone in my pocket. Had to leave to go get kids from school. Get to school, waiting, waiting.....nothing. Finally go to text son, take my phone out of my pocket and sure enough - 2 texts from him, 25 minutes earlier saying he's going to be late. I never saw them, because the phone was in my pocket the entire time.

Thanks Apple.

If that is the case, I wish they would put the notification back. I too have a problem with this. If I have the phone up to my ear on a long conversation, I am missing text notifications that come in. Like the person above mentioned also, when using BT headphones in the gym, I have my phone in my bag.

Yes, if they changed things after having them work differently (for a long while) before, it would be appropriate to have a way to still provide previous behavior for those who might need/want it.

Finally talked to Apple via Twitter. After the usual BS about troubleshooting, they did finally said this:

Now just realizing that this also causes notifications from reminders to not be seen or heard while on a phone call. So much for setting a reminder to leave for an appointment - just make sure you aren't using your phone as a phone when you expect the reminder to go off.

I can confirm that this has been fixed in iOS 14.2 for me. :)

I now hear notifications while on a phone - both for incoming message as well as reminders.
