It's almost impossible to see it when it isn't lit up, but I also don't see it in any of the photos or tech specs on Apple's site for the non-retina Macbook Pro.
My mistake but still weird. The light pulses once when you turn the MBP on but is not lit the whole time you are using it. It does pulse like normal when in sleep. I guess they didn't want it on all the time? That threw me.
OK, just a departure from the 2011 model I guess?? On that the light is on solid when the machine is on, pulses in sleep and is off when off (just like any other PC).

I can't say for sure about the 2011 models, but my 2008 model does not keep the light on when using it, only when entering or leaving sleep mode, and pulsing while in sleep mode. (Maybe also on boot up, not sure about that).

my 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2011 Macbook Pro models do not do that. They do NOT stay on when the machine is operating... and my 2012 rMBP doesn't even have a light.
SOLVED: The light stays on solid when the machine is on and in clamshell mode.
My 2011 MBP light went out when I took it out of clamshell and put it somewhere else without an external monitor. The 2012 light went on when I put it in clamshell mode on my desk.
This light is actually a very smart indicator of whats going on.
