I didn't think the YouTube UI on tvOS could get any worse, but now the pause button has been removed.

The physical pause button on the Siri Remote doesn't work either.

I hope this is a bug or oversight, and not working as intended.

Anyone else confirm that pausing doesn't work on YouTube?

I am using my ATV4K1 with the Siri Remote.

I am still on tvOS 14.4, so maybe I will update the OS and see if that makes a difference.

I can confirm there is no more pause.
You mean to tell me you CAN NOT pause a YouTube video on Apple TV?

This new remote seems worse than the old one in numerous ways. I’m planning on getting a new Apple TV 4K to replace the old one (just want thread support) but maybe I’ll have to include the new redesigned remote when I sell the old 2017 ATV 4K, and stick with the other crappy remote.

Unless I am doing something wrong that I don't know about, I cannot pause a YouTube video on my OG 4K Apple TV with the new remote.

This actually appears to be an Apple problem.

I have YouTube v2.06.21 on both my ATV HD.

The one with tvOS 14.4 pauses fine.

The one with tvOS 14.6 won’t pause.

Thanks again, Tim Apple.

Are you using the new Apple Siri Remote? Or is this problem also impacting users with the old thin Siri remote? That one DOES have a Play/Pause button.

EDIT: I’m an idiot. Just looked at the new Siri Remote and it also has a Play/Pause button. 🙄😬

I’m using the black Siri remote on both. (The bitchaboutit remote.)

It is obviously, clearly broken on tvOS 14.6

Mine didn't work on tvOS 14.4, nor 14.6.

I think it is on YouTube's end, not Apple. The only thing that changed for me was the app update, not the OS, and not on other apps.

UPDATE:

The pause button randomly started working again in YouTube.

I was watching a video, went to pause it using the Siri Remote out of habit, and was surprised that the actual pause button and the touch pad work again.

And my 14.6 ATV pause now works as well, no problem.

WTF?

I think it is the app.

The app totally sucks. It isn't like it was good before, it just went from bad to worse.

It could be totally unrelated to the remote pause issue, but the new YouTube app removed the pause button on the UI.

Is it? I hit the pause on the remote and it works fine.

I think it is the app.

It's the YouTube app. Sometimes pause works (via the old remote), sometimes it doesn't. Haven't figured out the rules yet.

Update:

The physical pause button and clicking the Touch Pad sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't.

I still haven't figured out what triggers the bug or what makes it work again.

I tried closing out the YouTube app and restarting the ATV and neither fixes it. It even persisted through a tvOS update.

I would bet money that it is app related and not tvOS related, so hopefully this gets fix in the next YouTube update. Who knows when that might happen.

Since the on-screen pause button on the UI has been removed as well, this bug makes using YouTube very difficult.

With every update, I like the AppleTV version of the YouTube app less and less. I find I stream from my phone increasingly to get around some of the ridiculous UI choices and restrictions.

The UI of YouTube just keeps getting worse.

I like to know the thinking of having a big long list of subscriptions that one must scroll down one by one to get to the end of the alphabet. Mix that with using the Siri Remote's Touch Pad, and getting to the bottom of the list quickly is impossible for me.

This could be a solution for some, but once at home, I don't carry my phone around with me, and very rarely ever use it. So, it would be more disruptive in my life than dealing with YouTube's horrible tvOS app.

Can also confirm play/pause no longer works either on the physical or software remote in YouTube (updated ui) on Apple TV HD with tv os 14.6. Pressing the select or middle pad will play pause but not the play/pause button. Very annoying.

It seems that they are trying to cut corners by giving every streamer the Web interface. Less work, bigger ads. :(

It sucks because nowadays then even Apple is guilty for just slapping something together for AppleTV and calling it a day. That is why the hope of getting true touch wheel support is unlikely. If Apple wont even bother properly implementing their own touch wheel into their own apps then why would anyone else.

(BTW. Closed app, reboot AppleTV and play pause works fine for me)
