clearly, you aren't thinking hard enough.

perhaps taking off your apple-tinted glasses might do you some serious harm...ignorance is bliss, after all.

If you're invested in OSX, bought tons software that will only run on it, and generally dislike the feel of Windows... An old MacBook pro is then better than a top of the line Windows machine because it runs OSX out of the box. That's the meat of the argument. So what if the Windows machines spec better? It still won't get your work done if you've been on the Mac for years.

The same goes conversely. If you're heavily invested in Windows-only software, it doesn't make a lot of sense to switch to a Mac.

If I were in your shoes, I'd take a closer look at my own glasses.

so what if people have invested in one OS more than another?
to state that apple MBPs are better than any PC is just fanboyism, folley and blatant ignorance...this sort of idiotic delirium amongst apple users is actually the most toe curlingly worst part so far of making the switch to a mac for me , and for the life of me I have no idea how anyone can be such a brain-washed-groupie to a brand in this way.

I would like a refreshed MBP as much as the next person, but im not idiotic enough to say that the MBP is better than any PC out there on the market.

i'd keep the spectacles on, too if I were you.

New Z and 13" MBP can't be compared directly because they are very different. Z is one of the highest-end machines in Sony's lineup with specs making it unbeatable. MPB 13" on the other hand is entry-level model that is much less expensive compared to 15" and 17". That is why MBP 13" doesn't and won't match new Z for its features and overall package.

I had old Z11XRN and here's a list of it's drawbacks:

1. Build quality inferior to unibody, just not as solid (looks like new Z is almost as good as MBP except maybe for screen flex)
2. No 2560x1600 support via HDMI (problem of 99% laptops)
3. Battery Drain issue (even when notebook is off, Sony's "feature")
4. 9300M GS is low-end and I hoped for something better (330M in new model is a godsend)
5. No backlit keyboard (problem solved with new Z)
6. Vista experience (solved with W7)
7. New Z has proprietary SSD with no ability to replace it with 2.5"

Anyway, Vaio Z is power of highest-end 15/17" Macbook Pro in a laptop that weights as much as Macbook Air (+-100g is not a big deal)

The MacBook Air is 1.36kg, lighter than the Vaio Z. Other than that, the Z looks pretty cool. What is the pricing on that model?
1800-1900$ for "low-end" model (Core i5-520, 4Gb RAM, 128Gb SSD, 1600x900 screen, DVD-RW). Actual difference in weight between Air and Z is insignificant (1.36kg vs 1.35-1.43kg) but performance/features/battery life wise Z is in completely different league...

Z doesn't rival MacBook Pro's.... it just beats crap out of it.

Would it be worth the wait if it was coming out late this year??? We don't even know when it'll be out yet.... So far, it does not seem that worth it...

Well it's hard to complain about 2.... when there is no HDMI on the macbook pro... without an adapter.

This is making me think twice about selling my macbook pro and going with this. battery life isn't amazing, but then again I can always swap a battery. the 1600x900 screen is supposedly amazing. Also... It won't um... lower my sperm count if I use it on my lap ;)

I don't care about HDMI as HDMI (only good for watching films on TV) but I want WQXGA support from laptop's digital output. Apple's mini-Displayport does support 2560x1600 and 2560x1440 and I couldn't care less about whether it has HDMI or not.

Battery life no good? Maybe, but 6 hours of light usage / 4:25 hour of normal usage is more than respectable for such a machine. It may depend on Vaio Power Management not being optimized for new platform. Latest C2D Vaio Z was better in "reader's mode" probably due to more agressive power savings. And again Z is neither TT nor X, 1-1:30 hours under heavy load is cost of incredible raw power. Higher capacity battery is nice though...

I think you missed my point entirely. I never said Macs were better, did I?

Now you're just being silly.

you are correct Sir ... to a degree at least ....

Meaning I was not thinking hard enough for all the years we sent money to IBM/Lenovo, Dell and Sony only to see the quality nosedive on the Lenovo and Dell machines, poor screen quality, plastic feel, soft keyboards, heat, and then the problems came ... hell my blood pressure goes up just thinking about the "old days".

Those are the same days I spoke like you, (although not in such a smart assed tone), how Apple products where weird toys for graphics/publishing people, and how the iPhone was a toy and wouldn't catch on, blah blah blah.

From my first hand EXPERIENCE, not my opinion, from a day to day user experience, typing, handling, carrying/, looking at the screen, maintenance and repairs my Company's experience is a thousand times better with Apple products than it ever was with PC laptops. Hell, they missed the boat, lol, they're designing laptops with designs on the lid, an array of colors etc etc but all that can't hide their faults ...

Not only me but all of my staff are so happy with Apple's products ... not one of us think the competitors notebooks are better in any regard when considering 'day to day' user experience .... some of you missed that, we're not talking components at all ...

And, like I said in my original post this is 'OS aside' this a computer to computer comparison based on using these notebook brands for years, not reading about their new latest/greatest spec's online ...

Yes, I guess I am a "fanboy" ... BIGTIME :) Thanks to Lenovo, Dell, HP, Sony and Toshiba they've FORCED us to be this way.

I'm glad they did !! :D

LOL, people love their Mac's for a REASON ... go through hell with enough PC's and then start buying Mac's and have ZERO problems, it's pretty easy to be a fanboy.

People become 'fanboys' of products because they're good and they like them.

Get over it man, if can't handle people liking something they buy a lot and they discuss it on a "MAC FORUM" then go somewhere else where there's no fan boys to upset you.

Again, LOL

And while all the complaining about this .... then simply tell us ... What pc laptop rivals the MacBook, NOT spec's rather day to day use and maintenance.

To be more specific what 15" PC Laptop competes with the 15" MBP?

- The Lenovo T500s, NO - horrible screen, their famous keyboard is now low quality and too soft,)

- The Dell e6500's they've nosedived in quality so much and we've been in 'Dell hell' so bad I don't know where to start.

Maybe there's new notebooks I'm not aware of. I'd love to see one, nothing wrong with Win7, I like it just the hardware isn't what it could be if pc makers focused on quality, end user experience > screen, keyboard, build quality, battery quality etc...
