Last night my jailbroken iPhone (on o2 contract but not the iPhone one) suddenly started showing No Service in the signal bar area.
This is not my sim card as it works in my trusty Sony Ericsson fine.

The only thing i can think of that i changed before this happened is i installed SwirlyMMS but i cant think how this would be a problem.
I do occasionally get 1 tiny bar of signal and the occasional SMS coming through but not often.

I tried restoring the iPhone to 1.1.4 but no luck there.
My iPhone has modem firmware 04.04.05_G which was installed by ZiPhone.

If anyone could help i would be really greatful.

I'm having the same problem. Here's what I did.

I had a 1.0.2 phone that was unlocked (not sure what method was used, but if this matters, I can probably find out), so I used the Virginizer via http://i.unlock.no, then did a restore to 1.1.1, then used the "Do it all" feature in ZiPhone to Jailbreak, Activate and Unlock. Everything seemed to go OK except that now it won't recognize any carriers when I have my Rogers SIM card inserted. I tried putting in the original SIM card that came with the phone and then doing the same process, but it does the same thing when I put the Rogers SIM card back in (No Service) although the Carrier option from settings can still be accessed - all that can be chosen is Automatic or Manual - Rogers won't show up though. I did some reading on the seczone possibly being damaged, but I'm not really sure what this is or if this is related to my problem. If anyone has been successful in fixing a problem similar to what I listed above, or if someone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful so that I don't have too much downtime on my phone. I've been avoiding doing this upgrade for months now, and finally got antsy since ZiPhone seemed to automate the process for noobs like me.

As for some background info, when my phone was in 1.0.2 there was an app on the home screen called "Unlock" which I assume was there from the old unlock method. I remember back when I had 1.0.2 I got the No Service problem every now and then, but all I had to do was go to the Unlock app and hit "Start" and it would run some processes and then reboot the phone, and it worked again. Of course, since I upgraded to 1.1.1 I lost that app (unless it is hidden and causing a problem). I also had installer on there, and a backgammon app, and possibly something else, and I meant to uninstall all of these before doing the upgrade but forgot. Also, after using the automated process on ZiPhone, it did not install the installer app. I had to do this manually from jailbreakme.com.

I'm stuck. I feel like I'm just wasting my time virginizing and restoring. What is my safest and most effective method for getting the Rogers SIM card recognized again like it was on 1.0.2? Is there a way I can clear those hidden apps or somehow re-access the old Unlock app that used to fix this issue when I had 1.0.2? Perhaps something needs to be repaired? I even tried changing my IMEI to the number on the back of the phone but no luck. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I've read about downgrading the baseband, but I'm not sure what this will mean exactly. Is it worth a shot?

Well ive tried everything too, tried doengrading the Baseband also but it crashed and i ended up with the "no wi-fi" and "needs repair" problem also.

I then downgraded to 1.0.2 and then up to 1.1.1 then 1.1.2 and managed to get rid of the "no wi-fi" etc but my No Service message is still there.
I think somewhere along the line i used ZiPhone to do the refurbish restore on it to mess with the baseband but this made no difference.

Surely theres a fix out there somewhere?
Come on yu hackers, get fixing! :p :D

    fixed

I fixed my problem by re-virginizing the phone, then following the manual instructions here:
    http://iphone.unlock.no/#Bypass-Activation-and-Jailbreak

I just went to 1.1.1 to avoid any other problems, so it seems that the all-in-one button on ziphone doesn't work for virgin 1.1.1, at least not for me.

I'm happy with 1.1.1 since it's a nice upgrade from 1.0.2, but I may gander into a later version since summerboard doesn't seem to work with 1.1.1 and I'd like to get some themes.

How did you Virginize the iPhone before following the guide?

All of the information is here:
    http://iphone.unlock.no/

    http://iphone.unlock.no/#how-to-downgrade-and-virginize-baseband

That is how you virginize your phone. Once it's virginized, you should restore your firmware manually (1.1.1). The instructions are all there (and the firmware download).

    Follow these directions:
    http://iphone.unlock.no/#Bypass-Activation-and-Jailbreak

Has anyone had any progress on this issue? I'm on 1.1.4 and i used ziphone 3.0 to do-it-all. Yesterday the signal was pretty good, had a couple of no services but mostly worked. Then I installed summerboard today. At first, it worked fine and now there's the no service problem but it's on and off, i can't predict when it'll happen or stop.

Sometimes my phone will show Tmobile 1 bar but i still can't call out. When I go to select carrier, sometimes it says "loading" or "error". As i'm writing this, the signal came back and I was able to check my voice mail... but opps... spoke too soon, lost it again... sheesh...

I upgraded to 1.1.2 and then 1.1.3 without any problems (as far as I know).

I'm not sure if 1.1.4 is even worth it. I'm doubting it for some reason.

nabwong: Are you sure this is a problem to do with the iPhone and not your carrier? You should do some troubleshooting/trial and error to confirm that this is a problem with the iPhone software.

    Hey,

    Thanks for the reply scootro.

All the places that I have signal with my Nokia, i don't get it with the iphone ( same sim card ). I love the iphone but i'm getting frustrated.

    What tests do you suggest?

I would suggest restoring. Download the 1.1.4 firmware and do it manually. I mean, there may be a way of fixing the No Service bug via Winscp or something (I have heard about it), so you may want to search the net for some other encounters/solutions, but you may be better off just going with a fresh process right from scratch, because there may be several causes.

Then use iPwnage (it was just released for PC today I think, but if not it'll be tomorrow). If you don't have luck finding that, use iLiberty+ (assuming you're on PC).

Edit: I think most people would suggest iPwnage either way - I've heard it's worth waiting for.

ziphone seems to have some bugs still, but I'm sure it has a bright future anyway.
